The Woodhouse Restaurant Bendigo

The Woodhouse Restaurant BendigoThe Woodhouse Restaurant Bendigo entree

I was delighted to have a lunch date at The Woodhouse Restaurant in beautiful Bendigo on the weekend.

I have been driving past this restaurant for years, ever since it charmed and beguiled me with its previous name  “The Puddler.” There is also something quant and delightful about its location and the actual building itself.

The Woodhouse has been open for some years now and was quick to receive accolades and praise for its food. Now that I have finally been able to visit I can understand why.

The largely steak based menu offered up many tempting suggestions and I was immediately tempted to try the “rost biff” as I had the strong impression whoever was in the kitchen knew what they were doing with a steak.  Maybe the glass fronted wall of steak fridge at the entrance was a clue.

I was not disappointed and I would go so far to say this was the best steak I have ever tried. Juicy, perfectly seasoned and with an excellent caramelisation on the outside and perfectly tender to the bite.

The Woodhouse Restaurant also has a great kids menu ($16 for a main and a starter) and my son also enjoyed perhaps the nicest meal he has ever eaten. In fact the rest of us were a little jealous by the beautiful meal on his plate. The Woodhouse Restaurant Bendigo

Steak can be served with a sauce of your choice and potato dauphinois, both very tempting offerings in my opinion.

You can also order from the pizza menu but why would you when everything else is so tempting? Perhaps because it too reads like a dream

The service was exceptionally helpful with particular attention paid to one of our guests with food allergies.

We ordered the lunch special, which included the two courses and a glass of wine for $40 and which was provided very good value in my opinion. You can also order from the  a la carte menu.

I tried and loved the zucchini blossoms  with pinenut, farro, basil, Meredith goats curd and eggplant salsa ($15).

The excellence of the locally sourced, modern menu and the intricate perfection of the food coming out of the kitchen was not quite matched by the interior design of the restaurant but I hear that there is a renovation on the cards.

The dimly lit, slightly hazy and brick walled interior of the restaurant is slightly reminiscent of a cave where all the treasured morsels are being served up.

I can wait to visit again and this time I’ll stay for the dessert. One of everything is on my wish list..

Happy Eating.

UPDATE 2018

Limestone Gallery Cafe is sadly now closed.

Port Fairy has a vibrant and thriving arts scene and a great way to experience what it has to offer is by visiting the Limestone Gallery and Cafe.

Limestone Gallery and Cafe Port Fairy

Limestone Gallery and Cafe is a little gem on the outskirts of town in Port Fairy. A passion project of artist in residence Meg Finnegan, this is a great place to view a selection of art from local artists, and then enjoy a bite of lunch or a walk in the garden when you are done. Continue reading

Basalt Cafe and Wine Bar

On the road between Warrnambool and Port Fairy near the volcano at Tower Hill is the most delicious surprise. Tucked neatly down the end of a driveway and surrounded by vineyard, farms and tapering hills you will find the Basalt cafe and wine bar.

Housed in what was once a winery shed, this is a surprisingly cosy cafe with a simple but impressive menu.

Fifteen Great Reasons to visit Port Fairy

Fifteen Great Reasons to visit Port FairyReasons to visit Port FairyI recently spent a glorious, child-free weekend away in the gorgeous coastal town at the end of the Great Ocean Road, Port Fairy. Port Fairy is a low lying coastal town in SouthWestern Victoria, 4 hours out of Melbourne. It has long been one of my favourite, beach side vacation spots in Victoria due to its beautiful beaches, picturesque historic riverfront port and thriving arts and food scene. Continue reading

Coffin Sally Port Fairy

Coffin Sally Port Fairy

Coffin Sally Port FairyWhen you take a weekend away in a beautiful, quiet, coastal location, it is not always possible to access the great dining options that are available in a big City.

But this does not happen when you visit Port Fairy.

Case in point is Coffin Sally which is owned and operated by Pete Charlton and serves great pizza that could easily rival Melbourne’s best.

With previous experience working at the much-loved Bottle of Milk and Pizza Pizza in Lorne, it is no surprise that Pete knows how to run a great eating house. Continue reading

Tasting Australia Festival and Words To Go 2016

Words To Go 2016

Eat My Street was invited to attend the Tasting Australia Words To Go 2016 Festival in Adelaide this year as part of the bloggers contingent for the Words To Go Conference. I was very excited and honoured to be invited along to hear some wonderful presenters talk about food writing and blogging and also to taste and see all that South Australia has to offer at its premier food festival.

Tasting Australia and Words To Go 2016

The Tasting Australia Festival ran from the 1st to the 8th of May in the town square in Adelaide and it is a free event open to the general public. Food trucks, regional kitchens and produce stores, cooking demonstrations, classes, dinners and much more combine together to create the program for the Festival.

Faces of Adelaide Market

Adelaide Central Market

Way back on the 23rd of January, 1869, the Adelaide Market was formed by a group of local producers who had previously been selling their wares at the Adelaide wholesale market. This enthusiastic little group started out in style with a dozen wagons full of fresh food and a brass band. I would like to think we could all learn a thing or two from this determined group of purveyors and from now on I will start all my new ventures being accompanied by a brass band.

The City Market as it was then called, was an instant success and the stallholders sold out of all their fresh food on that first day.  Shoot forward 147 years with a little pause for a relaunch in 1965, and Adelaide now has the Adelaide Central Market, home to the greatest number of fruit and veg stalls out of any market in Australia. Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel

Peppers Mineral Springs HotelPeppers Mineral Springs Hotel can be found in the beautiful spa town of Hepburn Springs in Victoria. Surrounded by country lanes, tree lined walks and undulating hills in all directions, Hepburn Springs is just a 5 minute drive from lovely town of Daylesford. At the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, Hepburn Springs is one of the prettiest spots in country Victoria. The region is also home to over 80% of Australia’s natural mineral springs making it a perfect destination for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel is a gorgeous art deco style hotel found in the main street of Hepburn Springs. I recently managed to visit on a rare child free weekend and it was a pleasure to stay in this beautiful hotel, explore the beautiful township of Daylesford, try out some of the great local eateries and enjoy a soak in the natural mineral waters of the Spa at the Hotel.

The Hotel is surrounded by stunning sculptured gardens and it also houses the award winning The Argus Dining Room restaurant. We arrived late in the day and ended up grabbing a quick bite at the hotel bar.

The Argus Bar and Lounge The food was tasty and the service was helpful. We enjoyed dining in the luxury and quiet of the front lounge.

I may have imagined myself in an Agatha Christie novel which is an excellent thing (in case you were wondering).

We also enjoyed breakfast in The Conservatory the next morning as this was included in our accommodation package. The room was elegant and light filled and the food was quite good. An excellent local muesli mix was probably one of the highlights although the Eggs Benedict were also very good. Plunger coffee, tea, juice, pastries, toast and fruit were all included. You could also order what you liked off the menu which was then cooked fresh in the kitchen.

The Conservatory at Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel

The highlight of Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel was definitely the gorgeous location, stunning natural surrounds and the simply elegant hotel room.

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel The rooms in the main hotel have been renovated but retain the original features such as gorgeous timber sash windows that look out in the surrounding countryside. There are a number of other accommodation options beside the main hotel rooms including self-contained rooms for small or large groups.

The lounge, lobby, library and conservatory at the Hotel were also very beautiful, being filled with art, lamplight and soft furnishings.

You can probably tell that I loved it.

We also enjoyed dessert at the nearby Belvedere Social. There are many, many other great things to do in the local area including a visit to the Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens and a walk and a coffee at Daylesford Lake.

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel was a unique and elegant hotel and I look forward to visiting again some time.
