Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel

Peppers Mineral Springs HotelPeppers Mineral Springs Hotel can be found in the beautiful spa town of Hepburn Springs in Victoria. Surrounded by country lanes, tree lined walks and undulating hills in all directions, Hepburn Springs is just a 5 minute drive from lovely town of Daylesford. At the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, Hepburn Springs is one of the prettiest spots in country Victoria. The region is also home to over 80% of Australia’s natural mineral springs making it a perfect destination for relaxation and rejuvenation.

gardens at Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel is a gorgeous art deco style hotel found in the main street of Hepburn Springs. I recently managed to visit on a rare child free weekend and it was a pleasure to stay in this beautiful hotel, explore the beautiful township of Daylesford, try out some of the great local eateries and enjoy a soak in the natural mineral waters of the Spa at the Hotel.

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel

The Hotel is surrounded by stunning sculptured gardens and it also houses the award winning The Argus Dining Room restaurant. We arrived late in the day and ended up grabbing a quick bite at the hotel bar.

The Argus Bar and Lounge The food was tasty and the service was helpful. We enjoyed dining in the luxury and quiet of the front lounge.

The Argus Bar and Lounge Hepburn Springs

I may have imagined myself in an Agatha Christie novel which is an excellent thing (in case you were wondering).

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel food

We also enjoyed breakfast in The Conservatory the next morning as this was included in our accommodation package. The room was elegant and light filled and the food was quite good. An excellent local muesli mix was probably one of the highlights although the Eggs Benedict were also very good. Plunger coffee, tea, juice, pastries, toast and fruit were all included. You could also order what you liked off the menu which was then cooked fresh in the kitchen.

The Conservatory at Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel

The highlight of Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel was definitely the gorgeous location, stunning natural surrounds and the simply elegant hotel room.

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel The rooms in the main hotel have been renovated but retain the original features such as gorgeous timber sash windows that look out in the surrounding countryside. There are a number of other accommodation options beside the main hotel rooms including self-contained rooms for small or large groups.

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel

The lounge, lobby, library and conservatory at the Hotel were also very beautiful, being filled with art, lamplight and soft furnishings.

You can probably tell that I loved it.

We also enjoyed dessert at the nearby Belvedere Social. There are many, many other great things to do in the local area including a visit to the Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens and a walk and a coffee at Daylesford Lake.

Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel was a unique and elegant hotel and I look forward to visiting again some time.

BEANd San Remo

It is a little bit of a favourite of mine too, ever since I washed up in search of coffee on the WORST weekend of the year to visit Phillip Island, the Grand Prix weekend. So much traffic, so many people. But the sweet comfort of BEANd, a local playground and a meandering walk to the beach was all I needed to make my day come out on top!

BEANd is a local boutique coffee roastery too and they roast their coffee beans daily and it is this level of love and attention to details that kind of permeates the rest of the store.

You can order a range of Smoothies $6.80 Spirulina & Berry | Banana | Very Berry | Hemp & Banana.

Berry and Cherry Farms to visit this Summer

The best farm gate and u-picks for Summer
Berry picking is a Summer ritual for my family, heralding all that is good about Summer in Melbourne and also ensuring we have a bejewelled table come Christmas Day.
I have complied a little list of the cherry and berry farms in the surrounding areas.
Most farms will charge you entry as well as for the fruit you pick. Normally around $5 to $15.
There are also a few that only sell at local markets such as Fleming Berries so keep an eye on those market dates.
Just click on the name of the Farm for more information and to go direct to their website.

Belvedere Social Daylesford

Belvedere Social Daylesford

On our recent visit to the beautiful spa town of Daylesford we visited the brand new and very gorgeous Belvedere Social. Based around the idea of the 1940’s social club, this restaurant/bar is set in a striking old building in the main street of Daylesford. The restaurant is owned and run by the charming Bernard who is a dab hand at mixing cocktails and sharing smiles and anecdotes in equal measure.

Belvedere Social Daylesford

Belvedere Social Daylesford has a smallish but interesting menu. We popped in for dessert and we were delighted with our selection of Seasonal Berry Vacherin, Basil $16; berries with Chantilly cream, basil infused strawberries and dehydrated meringue.

Belvedere Social in Daylesford

The Charcuterie Board at $32 was equally tempting. The menu is divided into sections: Grown, Caught, Raised and is brought together using local suppliers and buyers. There were a lot of dishes on the menu that I would love to have tried and I could have happily spent an entire evening enjoying the moody grey walls, pressed tin roof, climbing rose strewn front glass doors and industrial elegance of the room.  Take a look at the menu by clicking here.

Belvedere Social also has a very interesting and extensive tea menu curated by the Australian Tea Masters   and enthusiastically explained to me by my dapper and bow-tie bedecked waiter. I am very keen to return and sample some of the lovely selections. On this occasion I was too distracted by the glittering cocktails on selection and ordered myself a very pretty Rose Mojito.

UPDATE 2017. This restaurant is now under new ownership and is known as Hogget Kitchen.

One hundred kms South East of the City of Melbourne, on  a well worn path of Freeway that skirts the ranges, you will find the “wild dog” country town of Warragul. Surrounded by rolling green hills be-specked with dairy farms, Warragul reaches for the Strezleki ranges on one side and the Baw Baws on the other and armfuls of swamp filled flatland in the space between.

Well, and now you quit the dish of  soft hills

with eyes of water    clouds forever rising

grass dotted here and there with leather-bound animals

sunlight in drifting swatches.

“Gipplsand Fading” by Chris Wallace-Crabbe. Read more here.

Warragul is a town I once knew well but on each of my recent visits I am impressed afresh with what she offers. There are her overtly observable charms of open space, green hills and rolling countryside. But I have more recently been beguiled by her finer features; the pastoral bowl, the recently accredited Farmers Market, historic buildings, accessible parklands and a burgeoning food scene.

I have written before about the surprising Big Spoon Little Spoon in Warragul and String and Salt Cooking school. But this time I was in search of something new.

Just outside of the main town is the award winning Wild Dog Winery and this was my destination. Eat My Street went for a visit for a mid-week lunch.

Wild Dog Winery has just been awarded the Restaurant and Caterers Savour Award for best country restaurant in a winery. After my recent visit, I can understand why.

Perched upon a hill top in the rolling ranges just outside of Warragul, this winery and restaurant pleases with stunning views and striking architecture form the moment you arrive. The delicious food being served up by Chef Ed McDowell only serves to continue the impressive display.

Wild Dog Winery

The views once you get to the car park are pretty delicious.

The restaurant itself is full of blonde wood, glass windows and those grape-vine dotted, gum-fringed, rolling green hills beyond.

Wild Dog Winery

We ordered the Charcuterie share plate as the front counter fridge was just bursting with charcuterie goodness and who am I to resist such visceral temptation?

Wild Dog Winery

We were given 3 choices from the following options; Wild Venison Salami, Chilli Pancetta, Wagyu Bresaola, Proscuitto, Felino Salami, Wild Boar Salami, Jamon, Pepper Pancetta, Olive Sopressa. This was served with Hope Farm bread, pickled vegetables and Burratta. $32.90

Wild Dog Winery

Time waiting for our food was passed in the pleasant occupation of wine tasting. A bottle of the Wild Dog Wild Nectar wine was then purchased to accompany us home.

Wild Dog Winery boasts an extensive seasonal menu.

We very much enjoyed our lunch and those views and the friendly service in from restaurant staff. A great place to visit, even if you don’t drive an Aston Martin.

Happy Eating.

Heide Footsteps Festival

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Tussock Upstairs Gallery in Point Lonsdale is celebrating  its first ever Heide Footsteps Festival. The Festival is being held to commemorate the famed and influential Heide group of artists, and their connection to the local Point Lonsdale area.

The Heide artists group including Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Sunday and John Reed, and Joy Hester, used to holiday in the Point Lonsdale area. Local gallery owner Bevan Shephard felt this historical connection was worth celebrating and so the idea of the Heide Footsteps Festival in Point Lonsdale was hatched.

Heide Footsteps Festival

Events are being held in Point Lonsdale for the whole weekend and include;

  • Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Tour 9am to 1pm Sunday
  • Heide Footsteps Exhibition all weekend @Tussock Upstairs Gallery
  • Wine tasting with Terindah Estate
  • Heide Footsteps Walking Tour at the Surf Club 11.40am Sunday
  • An evening sound and light show at Tussock Upstairs Gallery
  • Heide Book Launch 2pm Sunday @ Tussock Upstairs Gallery
  • Live music throughout the weekend.
  • Jazz Supper dance on Saturday night at the Point Lonsdale Bowling Club

I was lucky enough to visit the gallery in time to see the gorgeous and talented Sassy Soul Sisters perform live on the outside deck of the gallery. They were fabulous and the location was amazing.

String and Salt Cooking School

Last night I had the pleasure of being invited along to attend a cooking class at String and Salt Cooking School in Warragul.

String and Salt Cooking School

Opened by Warragul locals Michelle and Dave 18 months ago, String and Salt operates as a beautiful homewares store by day and a warehouse style cooking school by night. Housed in a beautifully renovated building in the main street of Warragul, String and Salt is a little gem of a store that is loved by locals and visitors alike.

Michelle from String and Salt Cooking School

The range of classes on offer at String and Salt really excites; gluten-free, Malaysian, Sausage Making, Salami Making, South African, Dad’s in the Kitchen, The basics of Bread and more. Classes are taught by a variety of chefs and cooks.

Last night was “A Taste of the Peninsula” themed class, presented by Michael Demagistri of the newly established East. Bar and Dining in Mount Martha. Michael might be known to some of you from his time on MasterChef: The Professionals, where he made it into the top four before being eliminated.

Michael Demagistris from East

To start the evening, Michael shared with us a little bit about his history and  journey as a Chef.  Highlights include his time working with Jacques Reymond, a 3 month stint at Noma and his role as head chef at the Sorrento Golf Club. Two weeks ago he realised his long-term dream of opening a restaurant in beautiful Mount Martha.

Michael’s passion is to make food from scratch, using natural produce with a touch of playfulness. He also likes to forage beach-side and what better place could there be to do this than the beautiful Mornington Peninsula.

FullSizeRender

Our menu for the evening was:

Seven Spiced Pumpkin Seeds

Scampi, brown butter snow, lemon powder and miso. This dish was melt in the mouth delicious and may have been my favourite.

entree at String and Salt Cooking School

Heirloom tomato, purple basil and burata salad.

salad at String and Salt Cooking School

Seafood Paella with clams, mussels, flathead, scallops, nasturtium and salt bush.

Paelle at String and Salt Cooking School

Creme brûlée with banana ice cream and crispy pearls.

dessert at String and Salt Cooking School

All of the food was amazing and beautiful with multiple layers of flavour that really “zing” together on the plate.

String and Salt cooking school provides an elegantly casual environment to listen to the experts talk about their cooking, and to learn some tips on how to  replicate the dishes at home. There were opportunities throughout the evening to “have a go” and there was a very hands on approach to smelling, tasting, and seeing all the produce that Michael had brought along (or foraged on his way) for the evening.

IMG_0503

You never know what little piece of information you might pick up during a cooking class. I learnt

  • how to shell and prepare Scampi
  • how to pickle lemon
  • a little bit about foraging
  • how to prepare a dehydrated capsicum powder
  • I love creme brûlée ( I may have already known that one)

Yarra Valley Balloon Festival

The Yarra Valley Balloon Festival 2015.

Yarra Valley Balloon Festival

I was invited by Yarra Ranges Tourism to attend the inaugural Yarra Valley Balloon Festival at the Yarra Valley Racing Club. Following immediately on from the Cox Plate Day race meeting, the event kicked off with a (ticketed) cocktail party with scenic views overlooking the track. Other highlights of the event included.

  • a parachute jump display Yarra Valley Ballon Festival
  • build your own lanterns for the first 200 children
  • free children’s activities
  • fireworks to conclude the evening
  • Vintage Plane Fly-by & Acrobatic display
  • Yarra Glen CFA Demonstration

The absolute highlight of the evening was the coordinated balloon night glow. Thirteen hot air balloons all lit up at once on the racing track. It was a spectacular sight.

The balloons were majestic and magnificent.

Round Bird Can’t Fly

Round Bird Can’t Fly in Lilydale

On the Main street of Lilydale presides the propitiously named cafe, Round Bird Can’t Fly. If the cute little name does not win you over, then the decor will. Round Bird Cant Fly is all gleaming whites and copper tones, bedecked in flowers (fresh fig bouquets on the day I visited) and freckled with the ultimate epicurious decor, great food.

Ricotta Dumplings with mascarpone, lemon curd and cinnamon crumble for starters. This is not your every day breakfast menu rather it is a menu dominated by interesting combinations with an A+ for effort. Take a look at the Round Bird Can’t Fly menu for more information.

On the day I visited I ordered the Brioche French Toast with macerated berries and chai ice-cream. French toast makes me all nostalgic and this berry drenched brioche version has done nothing to mitigate my sentimentality.

IMG_7614

Round Bird Can't Fly brunch

There was also a lovely Kids Menu, which always makes me happy. The lovely toasted ham, cheese & tomato sandwich was happily devoured by my little man.

Coffee was hot, strong and delicious and served in Le Creuset.

Round Bird Can't Fly

The menu changes regularly and is  full of tempting options. The service was prompt and the cafe has a happy buzz to it.

A visit to  Round Bird Can’t Fly is a perfect way to start your day.

Yarra Valley Regional Food Group Farmers Market

This is part two of my visit to the Yarra Valley as a guest of the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group. It involves Shannon Bennet in a red helicopter, life-changing wine, expansive vistas and doughnuts.

I love visiting gorgeous farmers markets in and around Melbourne. I recently posted a list of my favourite markets in my local area. Now I have a new one to add. The original Granddaddy of all markets (and still as fresh as ever) the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group Farmers Market.
