One Fine Day in Beaconsfield

FullSizeRender

Beaconsfield just keeps getting better and its latest darling is the busy little cafe One Fine Day.

Spooned gracefully into the long, narrow space that Corridor used to occupy, One Fine Day is a cafe with an interesting brunch and lunch menu and a gorgeous array of delicious menu items.

One Fine Day has been very busy since it first opened a few months ago and space inside the tiny cafe is quite limited, but they do have a nice little courtyard space out the back for sunny days. I had the pleasure of visiting with my Eat My Street’s gorgeous recipe creator, Sharon and we managed to snaffle a seat inside.

First impressions were good.

Take a look at the One Fine Day Facebook page to keep up to date with their absolutely decadent and delicious selection of amazing muffin specials. These cherry ripe muffins look amazing but the caramello muffins- with a full sized caramello koala perched on top-  are now on my wish list. A perfect hump day 3pm snack I say!

Menu items include avocado smash, Acai smoothie bowls, banana bread, a selection of raw food treats, eggs on toast, Dr Martys crumpets and much more.

I tried the White peony tea which came in a pot and was smooth, crisp and delicious. Sharon sampled the coffee and gave it the Eat My Street tick of approval.

One Fine Day is a lovely little addition to the Beaconsfield area and its instant popularity is no surprise. The food is thoughtful and spans the divide of healthy options and decadent treats. The staff were friendly and helpful and if you can snare yourself a table this is a great little spot for brunch or lunch.

Otherwise why not order a take away coffee through that front window and grab a muffin to go. Your friends will thank you.

Happy Eating.

D’Angelo Estate Vineyard

D’Angelo Estate Vineyard is a lovely little vineyard and cellar door in Officer, just outside of Berwick. Set on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding pastures and housing states and with views stretching to Western Port Bay.

D'Angelo Estate Vineyard

Since my last visit the restaurant has had a little bit of an upgrade and the seating area has been extended. They also have installed some lovely pizza ovens and are pumping out some excellent pizza using delicious ingredients ($18 – $22). The  tasting menu for groups of ten or more ($25 pp) looked like very good value. This has to be ordered prior to your visit.

We ordered the San Daniele Pizza $22.

D'Angelo Estate Vineyard

We also ordered the Cheese Plate. $20

D'Angelo Estate Vineyard

The drinks menu include D’Angelo Estates own range of ciders $6, including apple, pear and strawberry.  There is also a lovely selection of very reasonably priced wines from the cellar door that you can order at your table.

Service is casual and very friendly, you may even be lucky enough to have a chat with the very amiable and hospitable proprietor.

This is a great local place to visit for a casual night with friends.

The Friday Phone In| Top picks for the weekend

So we have manned the phones, checked the town noticeboard and scanned the Parish Newsletter. The votes are in for our Friday Favourites and top tips for the weekend.

cold-697416_1280

It is a little cold in Melbourne right now, but as my gorgeous French waiter at the Piggery Cafe in Sherbrooke said to me yesterday “brisk, not cold.” So yes, I am looking on the bright side. Brisk it is (imagine it with a French accent, nice yes?). Plus, school holidays have arrived! No more early morning starts in the cold for 2 weeks. 🙂

Here are my top picks for the weekend.

1. Dinner at O.My.

Mr eatmystreet & I at O.my restaurant.
Mr eatmystreet & I at O.my restaurant.

I was lucky enough to eat at O.my again last week and due to a late cancellation we found ourselves dining in the gorgeous private dining room out the back. It was so beautiful and cosy and the service was fantastic as always. We had the 6 course degustation and my companions ordered the matching wine so we even had our own sommelier. You can read more about O.My here. If you are not in the market for fine dining then maybe jump in the car and check out Iv’s Burritos Food Truck in Upwey. Or for my current food crush, try the best Korean food in Melbourne at Kimchi Hut Glen Waverley.

Dandenong Ranges

2. Inspire. Stop looking at Facebook photos of all your gorgeous friends on holiday in Bali (or is that just me?)  and instead get in your car and head to somewhere beautiful close by. For me that would be Sassafras in the Dandenong Ranges.  Chojo Bonsai Gallery, Cafe de Beaumarchais, a wander through the mist and a peek in a few gift shops. Don’t forget your beanie, your camera and a few dollars for the Sweet Shop (I’ll have a bag of Pear drops please. How kind of you to ask).

3. Buy. Casey-Berwick Farmers Market at the Old Cheese Factory. 8am to 12.30.  or the Yallourn North Winter Market. The Yallourn North Winter Market launches tomorrow and I have never been there but it looks great. Let me know what you think if you manage a visit. The Casey-Berwick Farmers Market is run by the local RSL and generally has a good smattering of gorgeous food all within the beautiful grounds of The Old Cheese Factory.

4. Bake.  The browneyedbaker.com is the winner of this weeks #Sharethecakeau. She shared a beautiful Snickers Cake with her family and the instructions for chocolate-183543_1280making it can be found here. It looks absolutely amazing and far too complicated for this simple cook. Ever more importantly, there is a very special and very beautiful story behind why she made her Snickers Cake so do please give her a visit and read about it. I recommend you bring tissues. To find out more about #sharethecakeau head here. Or head on over to my Instagram account.

5. Make. Get Crafty with Pip from MeetmeatmikesPip Pip is a writer, crafter and author from Melbourne. She loves a crochet square and a craft project and the school holidays may just be the right time for you to check out her blog. It is very beautiful and it will make you smile. It also may inspire you to crochet a blanket or decorate a shadow box. You’ve been warned.

Plus, eatmystreet has embarked on an exciting new project. As well as my mission to get more people connecting together over the sweetness of cake #sharethecakeau, I am also about to launch a series profiling local, inspiring folk of note and their favourite cafes. How awesome is that. I am très excité (oops, the French waiter is haunting me).  So sign up to my blog here or head over to Facebook to “like” me (blush, I am touched) to keep up to date.

Happy Eating.

Carlei Green Vineyards Winery & Cafe

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a good surprise.”

Carlei winery

Spring (we are nearly there) is the perfect time of year to visit Carlei Green Vineyards Winery and Cafe. Pop in from 11am on a Sunday morning for wine tasting, or from 12 midday to order from their menu.

The wine’s here seem to have had their day in the sun and even earned their maker, none other than Sergio Carlei himself, a mention in the James Halliday wine companion in the past. I have had a cheeky little taste of their whites and also imbibed a few glasses of the stuff. Quite good, although I am no wine expert.

Their pizza though is superb. Pizza at Carlei green vineyards and winery

We have been out to their Vineyard a handful of times and we have often taken friends with us.

The service is friendly and the scenery is amazing. The kids really settle in here for a meal nicely too with good eating options and plenty of space.

It is a bit of a favourite for one of those lovely, languishing Sunday lunches with friends.

Get onto it!

Happy Eating.

Cafe Revival in Beaconsfield

24 Wood St, Beaconsfield.

Phone. 97694334

I am an early adaptor. As soon as I get the first hint of a new cafe I am excited and keen and dreaming that all my cafe dreams will finally be fulfilled (Home made chocolate mousse cake that does not make you fat, coffee that does not require you to extend your mortgage to be able to afford a cup every day, wait staff that sing and dance- all the normal stuff). So as soon as I heard that Revival Cafe in Berwick were opening a new outpost, I was pencilling in a visit. Well my pencilled in visit got its pen licence this morning because I got to visit! Woo Hoo!

I am not sure exactly how long they have been open although I have heard rumblings for a couple of months. Certainly the hand written notes handing out the front of the building would indicate that it is still very new.

Cafe Revival in Beaconsfield

So the new Cafe Revival is in the back blocks of Beaconsfield. It is actually a pretty great location as there is plenty of parking, a fairly pretty outlook and away from the bustling main road in Beaconsfield. It also means that this cafe has quite a bit of space for seating when you count the indoor seating and outdoor seating space. Thanks to Melbourne’s freak weather today (21 deg C) there were actually quite a few people sitting outside.

This is the Cafe that Berwick and surrounds has been needing. It is a cafe that you can turn up to with your lap top and your book and sit all day without feeling that you are getting under people’s feet. It has the comfortable thing going on, even with its industrial chic stylings. The interior is actually a bit of a mish mash of all things fashionable right now. We have industrial light fittings and bench tops mixing it with retro chairs, spoons and table tops (think Grandma’s best vinyl bench).

The coffee is good and hot here, the menu of cakes, slices, sandwiches and wraps is pleasing and the atmosphere is casual comfort and I really like this.

Cafe Revival Beaconsfield

The coffee was $3.90. Ridiculous price but pretty much the same as everywhere else in the local area. They use Segafredo beans and also some organic bean that I am unfamiliar with. The staff were friendly and helpful and laid back and hit a pretty good note for this style of cafe.

Two more things. The Mummy’s were drinking here today, in groups. This I love! The Mummy’s (and Daddy’s) deserve to have somewhere to go to drink and chat before they get on with their multi tasking. Secondly, they gave me a chocolate with my coffee. It had mint in it. I was not expecting this. It was yum.

Cafe Revival in BeaconsfieldSo I will definitely return, I may even bring a friend. I think I may finally have made at least one local friend, maybe two- not counting the Kangaroo’s.

See you there fellow Berwick/ Beacy-ites.

O.My in Beaconsfield. The beautiful one.

O.My on UrbanspoonO.My in Beaconsfield

I have been waiting to post about this restaurant for a while because, well because I really love it!

I first noticed O.My in Beaconsfield when I was walking to my car and was distracted by its front window. You can’t see in O.My from outside you see, and so it has a certain allure to it. All dark, tinted front window and fenced off garden. But somehow I knew something good was coming and indeed I was right.
Apparently two local brothers have opened this fine dining restaurant and boy do they know how to cook.
I was lucky enough to have a date for Valentines Day. Lucky me! Actually it wasn’t quite as good as it sounds as I have three children and thus the chances of me dining out on a special occasion are rather dim. So instead we went out the night before Valentine’s Day. Nearly the same but perhaps not worth bragging about.
The restaurant looks sleek and modern and interesting so we dressed up. I mean who really needs an excuse to dress up when you spend your day with a two year old, but that is my excuse any way.
I had read the early reviews. The word was out that the bread here was baked fresh on site and that is is excellent. It comes in one of those cute little collapsible paper bags and is served with real butter. Tick and tick. I love butter and hate to waste the calories on anything but the real deal so I was well pleased. Also I am easily amused and thus appreciated the gorgeous presentation.
We acted like Gen Y selfie /iPhone obsessives and took a photo of the food. I was a little embarrassed in such a small restaurant, but I just had to share some snaps with you dear reader.
Don’t say I never do anything special for you.
I was keen to try the degustation, but with a 15 year old watching my three wild ones at home I decided speed was of the essence. Instead we opted for one entree to share, a main each and a dessert to share.
The menu is presented like this. Instead of say “fish and chips” it says, Potato, Batter, Salt, Fish, left over pieces of someone else’s burnt chiko roll.
Okay, well that is my example from my local chipper, not what they actually serve of course, but hopefully you see my point.
The food was very good, and delicious and beautiful and interesting.
Our waiter was one of the brother’s who own’s this restaurant. He was awesome! Excellent service. Really hitting that spot where you have enough attention but not too much. This is harder than you would think as I have had very many meals where the wait staff get it wrong. He was really friendly and informative and suggested great wine matches and really knew what was going on in the kitchen. He even took us for a little wander through the veggie garden out the back of the restaurant after we finished our meal. Right up my alley! (Pardon the phrase-age but if the shoe fits…..)
I could go on and on. You really need to visit. I could not recommend it enough. I have not seen any restaurant in this area anywhere near as good.
Did I mention the amuse-bouche that arrived at the start of the meal and also before dessert? So exciting.
The chef’s in the kitchen really are talented. I ordered a pork dish with carrot and my husband had the lamb. They did things with carrot that I do not understand but I really liked! The lamb was beautiful and so was the pork. They make their own aged master stock apparently and it really showed. We were both peering though the dimly lit shadows to try and determine what we were actually eating because there were so many different tastes on the plate. The pork looked a little something like this. Actually it looked exactly like this because here is another one of those reprehensible foodie photo’s.

O.My in Beaconsfield

All of it good.

The dessert sounded simple and it was. But it was that amazing simple that all the TV chefs talk about where the individual elements are all so perfect that the overall effect is amazing. And beautiful. Although I do recognise I am using that word far too much (shame, shame).

O.My in Beaconsfield

You can order two courses for $45 or three for $55. A five course degustation is $75.

You can visit their website here http://omyrestaurant.com.au, for more information. It is worth checking the opening hours before you turn up.

If you have a special occasion, then dine here! Even if you don’t, still dine here. The prices are fantastic for what you are getting.

And yes ,the bread was as good as everyone said. Just don’t fill up on it.
