Hey Mikey Espresso

I have been searching for a cafe to love in the Wantirna South area for many, many moons. This week I found one. Yippee! Hey Mikey Espresso has

  • an awesome assortment of delicious jaffles. They were good, very good.
  • spacious cafe with a stylish industrial-esqe fit-out
  • tunes turning on a record player
  • Back to the Future on the TV
  • I hear rumours of doughnuts
  • park side location

Importantly there was also great Axil coffee roasters coffee and friendly service.

Hey Mikey Espresso

The apple pie jaffle was so good. Better than I thought it would be. We’re talking custard and apple and cinnamon and icing sugar.

Hey Mikey Espresso

Alana (co-owner, and barista) designed the menu herself and there is a very enticing selection of waffles available. Maybe try the Reuben, the Lamington, or the Mac (it’s a cheeseburger in a jaffle-genius)!

Take a look at the menu here.

Worth visiting for the great coffee, friendly service and sweet surrounds.

Happy Eating!

Korean food is so hot right now in Melbourne, and not just because it is nearly always served with that lovely fermented side dish called Kimchi. Melbourne fell in love with Korean food quite some time ago with its classic dishes of Bibimbap, bulgogi and fried chicken.

A couple of weeks ago I spied a brand new Korean BBQ restaurant opening up in the Glen Waverley dining precinct, right next door to the ever popular Shira Nui. With its black and white paint work, clean lines and neat timber furnishings, BBQ Code looked like somewhere I would like to dine. Yesterday I got to try the food and I was not disappointed. In fact I am now a little smitten.

BBQ Code is bringing the street version of Korean food to Glen Waverley. Each (share) table is set with a couple of  inbuilt electrical BBQ plates. Order from BBQ section of the neat and tempting menu and your food will be cooked in front of you on your hot plate.

As with most Korean restaurants, an enticing selection of accompaniments will be brought to your table including the ever popular Kimchi (great for the gut apparently). I was also served a small dish of fish cake, or Eomuck Bokkeum.

BBQ Code Glen Waverley

The menu is divided into Korean Street Food, Rice and Noodles and BBQ and dishes include Grilled Chicken Stick $8, Dukkbokki $15.50, Bibimbap, $15 and Ranchi Guksu $15.

I ordered Jab Chae with Beef which was a sweet potato noodle dish and it was delicious.

BBQ Code is already looking busy just two weeks since it opened. I cannot wait to go back and try ordering from the BBQ menu, hopefully with friends so I can try  variety of dishes.

I recommend you give this little restaurant a try too. Fun, delicious and with friendly and helpful service. A great addition to the Glen Waverley scene.

Happy Eating.

Shira Nui is one of Melbourne’s most reliably good Japanese restaurants. Located in a small restaurant sitting back off Springvale Rd in Glen Waverley, you could easily walk pass this little gem of a eating house without stopping in to dine. If you did walk past, you would be making a big mistake.

Shira Nui has been around since 2003 and Chef Hiro Ishikura has been in charge of the kitchen for the whole time. Nab a seat at the Omakase bar ($90 for 9 courses) to really experience the best of what Shira Nui has to offer.  Omakase allows the Chef to chose all the dishes that you eat, and at Shira Nui you are also likely to receive instruction on how to make the best of the stunning Sushi and sashimi.

I recently attended with the little ones in tow so we dined off the A La Carte menu. We ordered the Gyoza $10 (image above) which was unrecognisable, but delicious. entree at Shira Nui Glen Waverley

The Age Dofu ($13) which is silken tofu, cut into cubes, dusted in starch and then deep fried until crisp and brown. The Crispy, silky texture combination, combined with the sweet/ salty sauce, creates a little magical mystery tour for your palate.

Shira Nui is a great restaurant for authentic Japanese food. Customers travel from across Melbourne to snap up a seat at the bar and with good reason. The service is attentive and polite and the restaurant is calm, simple and to the point. If you are hoping to try this excellent Japanese food, be sure to book.

Kimchi Hut Glen Waverley

Part of what I love about eating out in Glen Waverley is that it is bustling and busy and colourful; there is heat.

“It’s just,  the vibe of the thing.”

When I visit at night it reminds me of my time in Hong Kong, busy,  getting progressively busier as the night goes on. Never asleep, well not until early the next morning of course.

I remember eating out in Florence; me, an American with her “I only eat Gluten free” note that had to be delivered straight to the chef, my new glamorous friend from New York who worked for the UN. We turned up for dinner at a little local, at 8pm. We were told it would be open by then. Oh the derision from the wait staff, the scorn from the Chef. They would not let us in and we waited huddled on the pavement in the cold back streets of Florence (there are far worst punishments for cultural naivety I can assure you of that). In Florence, as in all of Italy, you eat late and you stay out later.

So Kingsway Glen Waverley is certainly not like that. You can turn up early, and in fact if you would like to park your car I recommend that you do. But it certainly grows busier as the night moves on.

Kimchi Hut is my new favourite. My meal there was one of those meals that stay with you, willing you to return for more.

I grew quite fond of Korean food eating at My Rice Story in Ivanhoe. Dinner there was quite different from Kimchi Hut, but the food was fresh and tasty and interesting. The Bibimbap was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. It was much more of a casual eatery though with an emphasis on take away food.

My Rice Story on Urbanspoon

At Kimchi Hut they have a spacious dining room and they seem to specialise in Shabu Shabu and Sizzling Plate. Shabu Shabu was very popular but I opted for a Claypot dish instead. With my three year old in tow I was not quite brave enough to cook my own food over a hot plate. Lots of other people were doing it, but alas, I was too cowardly.

My Teriyaki Chicken Rice Stone Pot was served with a dazzling array of awesome side dishes including pickled turnip, Spicy Coleslaw, Kimchi, two sauces (mayonnaise of some sort and chilli I think), broccoli florets with red sauce and miso broth.  So pretty, so yum!

photo 1

It had a raw egg blobbing around on top of it. A passing waiter stopped me mid chopstick to my plate to explain “you stir.” Yes, of course you do. You stir that little googie egg and it cooks in the sizzle and you discover crunchy little pieces of roasted rice while you are at it. Excellent idea.

photo 2

I also ordered a Mung Bean Pancake with Kimchi and it was so crunchy and full of flavour. I must have another one and soon.

Hubby ate Sizzling Chicken and Cheese which was drenched in cheese and which you would probably want to order as a share dish.

Overall it was a great experience. My children were welcomed as they always are in the Kingsway dining precinct. Service was efficient, helpful and effective with a sprinkling of friendly-ish.

So get amongst it. Take the family and enjoy the experience. You can even walk to the bubble tea shop “Happy Cup” or the Nitro Lab (if you have recently come into an inheritance) around the corner for dessert.

So eating great Korean food in Glen Waverley with the family is not quite as exciting as dining as a tourist in Firenze or Kowloon, but not all of life is a destination. Sometimes it is a the little splodges of enjoyment we have along the way that paint the story of our lives just as vividly as our grand adventures.

Happy Eating.

Where:

79 Kings Way

Glen Waverley

I have always loved the ever changing restaurant strip in Glen Waverley. We used to live very close by and visit there a lot. At one point I was a little worried about addiction. Kings Way has the best street food and dining strip in the whole of the outer South East, in my opinion. Vietnamese, Japanese, Australian, Korean, Chinese and now Mexican.

I have written before of my love for Mamasita in the city. It is gorgeous and the food is interesting and delicious and the ambiance is electric and you can barely hear what your dining companion is saying so you have to lean in close and the drinks and music and staff are great. They serve new wave Mexican food. Kind of like the Taco Bill of old, but only insofar as a Elvis impersonator is like Elvis Presley. The food is more fresh and inventive and less, well, saucy and formulaic.

So apparently, someone has decided it would be a good idea to fling a  restaurant serving Hispanic cuisine to us desperado’s out here in the Burbs. And they were right. Welcome, The Black Toro. You will be right at home here and very popular.  Enjoy it.

The food looks a little (actually a lot) like this.

.Image

I have been meaning to eat here since I caught wind of it early 2013. It apparently opened late 2012.

The menu includes sticky chicken wings with lime ($16), Oysters with tequila and lime ($8) and Spicy pulled pork tacos with shaved cabbage, onion and sour cream ($14). We ate potatoe and chorizo crocquettes  with red pepper relish and they were delicious.

Image

The restaurant itself really looks fantastic and it is a great addition to the usual utilitarian decor of a lot of restaurants on Kings Way.

The Black Toro

We really enjoyed our lunch here. We also ordered mini burgers. Who doesn’t love mini burgers? Although of course that is not what they were called on the menu as that would be so 1980’s. You can do a Where’s Wally (also 1980’s yes?) and try and find them on the interesting menu. I am sure the astute among you will have no probs. Otherwise I suggest just eat your way through the whole menu and eventually you will find them.

Happy Eating Amigo’s – nah that is inappropriate.
