Coal Cellar and Grill Adelaide

Coal Cellar and Grill Adelaide

I was invited to dine at Coal Cellar and Grill in Adelaide as part of the Tasting Australia 2016 Festival. It was the closing dinner for what had been an excellent food bloggers conference and the jinks were high, with so many enthusiastic foodies all joining together for dinner. The gorgeous Coal Cellar and Grill in Adelaide delivered on our high expectations with an impressive tasting menu that showcased the best of what South Australia has to offer.

Coal Cellar and Grill AdelaideCoal Cellar and Grill in Adelaide is set within the Hilton hotel in the heart of Adelaide. Chef Daniel Fleming, who trained under former Hilton Adelaide chefs Cheong Liew and Simon Bryant (of “The Cook and The Chef” fame- we are not worthy) has designed his menu around great local produce cooked on the grill, and an amazing 3000plus bottles wine list. We were able to chat with him at the end of the night and he shared his enthusiasm and love of hospitality and good food.

Now to the food. We were having a tasting menu which meant we were able to sample a a lot of small dish from the Coal Cellar and Grill menu.  There were 5 starters, 5 main, 3 side dishes and 5 desserts to taste, all of it delicious.Coal Cellar and Grill AdelaideCoal Cellar and Grill AdelaideSome of the highlights of them menu for me would be the Sangria marinated watermelon, feta, apple and pistachio crumble for entree.

The whole baby barramundi with fennel and lemon myrtle as a main.Coal Cellar and Grill Adelaide The very creamy and I assume, very naughty Confit garlic mash, truffle butter and chives as a side dish. Although as a veggie lover I also adored the perfectly cooked asparagus with hollandaise.

The “Bombe Australiana”  and the liquorice ice cream for dessert. Coal Cellar and Grill AdelaideCoal Cellar and Grill AdelaideFullSizeRenderThe menu had an interesting focus on native Australian ingredients and SA produce brought together under the watchful eye of a creative team in the kitchen. I enjoyed every mouthful.

I have travelled to a lot of different places and Hotel dining is not always successful. Here at Coal Cellar and Grill a lot of energy and investment has gone into creating a great restaurant that will lure local Adelaidians in search of well priced, excellent food, as well as feeding their many hotel guests. With an interesting menu, extensive wine list and beautiful fit-out I think they have succeeded on both these fronts.

Happy Eating.

Eat’aliano by Pino

Eat’aliano by Pino

There is nothing more perfect than beautiful Italian food on a cold Wintery night, so last week I was very excited to be invited to the opening of Eat’aliano by Pino. I painted my nails and put my high heels on and headed out for some beautiful Italian food.

FullSizeRender

Eat’aliano by Pino is a newly opened Italian restaurant in High Street Windsor serving traditional Italian antipasti, pizza, pasta, salad and desserts all accompanied by a killer drinks list.

FullSizeRender

The opening night was busy and buzzing. There were two talented little DJ’s and even a celebrity or two to keep me impressed in between bites of food. The pizza was cooked in a cranking hot wood fired stove which produces an excellent chewy but crunchy base (the perfect combo). The lovely Suppli all romana, Breosola and other assorted antipasto items on the Eat’aliano menu were also delicious and I am told that the Nutella Pizza was sweet, gooey perfection.

2016-05-23 19.57.56

The restaurant has had a modern, chic fit-out tempered beautifully by warm Italian touches such as an open kitchen with a stunning white-tiled wood-fired pizza oven, a bespoke drinks area and a display of cured meats.

2016-05-23 19.57.41

I had a great night at the opening of this great little Italian gem of a restaurant and I can’t wait to go back.

Happy Eating.

The French Saloon Melbourne

The French Saloon

The French SaloonIt is a long and complicated story that will probably never be told but I was this close to moving to Paris last year.

That dream has now been postponed and instead I find myself on a Friday night, eating in a gorgeous little French restaurant in the worlds most liveable city, Melbourne.

The French Saloon is the latest restaurant to open under the direction of Ian Curley: Chef extraordinaire and food empire building Godfather of the Melbourne dining scene.

Chef Todd Moses has come across from Supernormal to cook perfect, simple, French bistro style meals under the direction of executive Chef Ian Curley. When I say simple, I mean French simple, meaning excellent, well-chosen ingredients and dishes made with skill and precision in a classic way. Simple,  but definitely not simple, if you know what I mean.

The A La Carte menu is divided into “to begin” “to continue” “steak” “mains” “sides” “cheese” and “dessert.” With all that choice what is a girl to do but agree to receive direction from her charming and helpful French waiter. I was very keen to save myself for cheese and dessert courses so we went straight to the mains.

John Dory with cauliflower puree was perfection on a plate with great balance between beautiful flavours; creamy cauliflower puree, soft subtle fish with a gently seared crust, and a gently acidic sauce to drown it all in.

My partner ordered the Steak Frites with Roquefort butter and he was equally smitten with the flavours on his plate.

The French Saloon

We shared a side of the specials menu which was slippery jack mushrooms with artichoke two ways. This was a very decadent, creamy and delicious dish that we both enjoyed.

Then we moved onto the cheese course which was served with a little jar of honey and its honeycomb from a local rooftop beekeeper. This honey carried a lot of flavour and was a delicious accompaniment to the three styles of cheese we chose of the menu.

The French Saloon

For dessert we were moved to the beautiful zinc bar that stretches its way down one side of the room. I am told that this fabulous bar was imported directly from France and it was certainly a great juxtaposition to the red timber pitched room and simplicity of the rustic timber floors and white painted window frames of the rest of the room. Tres chic.

The French Saloon

Creme brûlée with chocolate Madeleine.

The John Dory and Artichoke side dish both take equal honours as my favourite dish of the year so far.

Service was excellent and did not really miss a beat  with our gorgeous and knowledgeable waiter charming us from the moment we arrived.

Visit the French Saloon for intimate, old-school dining in a gorgeous setting with food that will make you forget you are not far from home.

Happy Eating.

Dani xx

Rusty Water Brewery Phillip Island

Rusty Water Brewery Phillip Island

To celebrate out last night of holidays in beautiful Phillip Island we decided to take ourselves out for dinner. I really do love cooking when I am on holidays but I also love discovering new places and having a break from all that washing up.

I had heard that Rusty Water Brewery were producing some pretty good food and it had been on my must visit list for a while. I also knew that Rust Water Brewery was a fairly family friendly restaurant and so I booked a table.

Dining beachside in Cowes has become a fairly tourist centric game. A lot of the more interesting eateries seem to be cropping up outside of the main street of Cowes. Rusty Water Brewery sits just off the main road, a stones through from the Koala Park and a few other distinct tourist destinations.

The main dining room is very spacious and we were seated in a section that seemed to be dedicated to those eating with their children. There were colouring in books and crayons on the table and a fairly normal kids menu to order off. Service was fine and friendly and the drinks list was fairly comprehensive with a focus on their own local brews.

We tried the Seafood linguine.

The menu here was interesting and much more sophisticated than most other restaurants on the Island. Execution of the menu was pretty good although whoever made my salad was heavy handed with the dressing. Our duck was cooked well which shows there is talent in the kitchen and the kids meals ($10) were all gobbled up.

Overall we had a lovely experience and we all enjoyed our food.

RACV Resort Inverloch

RACV Resort Inverloch

Happy is such a neat emotion,

It’ll give your feet a happy notion.

Wise words from Elmo.

We went camping last weekend. Eek! I am not a big one for camping and I don’t do a lot of it, but is does have a funny way of making everyone happy. Breakfast with the birds, supper under the stars, fresh air flowing all around, and at RACV Resort Inverloch, stunning ocean views. The happiness factor seems to have something to do with simplicity, slowness and time spent together.

IMG_2765

Simple food is part of the equation of course and although I missed spending time baking, one of my favourite things to do on the holidays, I did still have fun coming up with our meals. For supper we bought some delicious locally made jam and sourdough from the RACV resort reception. There was no butter so we had the decadent delight of creamy camembert with fresh strawberry jam on excellent chunks of bread. So perfect and everyone loved it.

After seeing the stunning views of the coastline from the RACV Resort Restaurant we had to visit so we enjoyed dessert there one evening.

2016-02-06 18.18.28

We sampled the Sorbet selection.

Sorbet at RACV Resort Inverloch

Then moved on to the most amazing blueberry butter cake with brandy cream and berry coulis. This cake was creamy perfection and the flavours were offset perfectly by the berries and cream. Delicious.

The views in the restaurant are really breathtaking. You could visit just to take in the ever-changing endless blues and coastal views. The restaurant itself was also very comfortable and accommodating and the staff were courteous, helpful and friendly.

RACV Inverloch Resort

They offer an excellent sounding “Best of Gippsland” buffet lunch that I would love to return for. It was great to see the very stylish resort embracing local produce and its sense of place.

So visit for the happy tapping, but also for the lovely food and excellent service.

Happy Eating. Dani xx

Royal Standard Hotel Toora

Royal Standard Hotel Toora

This one is from a little further afield than usual.

This weekend we got brave and decided to steal a weekend away to the beautiful rolling hills of Gippsland. I say steal because, like any family of five, there is NEVER a weekend without something in it. Sport, parties, school events, work, anything. Always something.

We actually decided to leave early Friday and take the kids out of school for the day. We almost never do this, although it always pays off. Things are so much quieter when 99% of the population is at work or school.

Our destination was Wilsons Promontory.

We have a mixed race marriage, my husband and I. I mean, we are both Aussie born and bred but he likes camping and I do not. In a bid to find some kind of happy medium we lashed out and bought ourselves a caravan a few years ago. So this weekend my husband wanted to camp at Tidal River on Wilsons prom, sans electricity. I wanted to stay at the Marriott in Sydney, so instead we booked a site for our caravan at Waratah Bay.

One dead rabbit, 22 long distance hikes to the toilet and 50 hand washes in dirty lake water later and we had upped sticks and moved to a much nicer caravan park in Toora.

Toora, who has ever been there? Indeed who has ever heard of it? Not me. But. I. Loved. It.

Gorgeous little ghost town.

Gorgeous heritage buildings, overflowing gardens, endless coastal views and birds galore.

The husband convinced me to dine at the Royal Standard Hotel Toora for dinner on our first night.

Now I have had Trouble (with a capital T, see?) at country pub’s in the past. I’m thinking sticky carpet and a hovering cloud that smell’s of old, stale oil. A meal cooked in before mentioned oil. Smelly toilets and weird drunken glances.

Royal Standard Hotel delivered none of those things.

First of all there was a heaven sent designated children’s play area. With Play Stations. For free. And toys galore! The kids were smitten and excited the moment we walked in to the Hotel. I immediately forgave them the red and black patterned carpet (we all know that the sole purpose of this type of carpet is to hide the stains).

The staff at the Royal Standard Hotel were lovely and friendly and helpful. We ordered local wines at the bar where the bar man was busy but very helpful and chatty. The wine specials were reasonably priced.

Dinner was typical Pub fair and I went all 68 year old retiree and ordered the roast of the day. Hubby ordered one of the specials. The kids ate off the kids menu and we all enjoyed our meals. My roast was well cooked ($22). There were lots of veggies and this made me happy. Hubby ordered some kind of sausage three ways and I have to admit it was delicious (don’t tell him I said so). It was swimming in a pool of tasty gravy and sitting on some mash. Classic. The kids all ate fish and chips which was well priced at $9. There were other options for the children such as mini pizza or nuggets or even schnitzel.
The best thing about the whole evening though was the vibe of the place (if you know what I mean, which you probably don’t because that is such a silly, non-specific phrase). So I will try and explain.
There was a meat raffle and there were two local youths selling tickets. They were wearing cool t.shirts. The staff were lovely and friendly and helpful and some local Grade 5 girl had done a project on the history of the town and it was there in its plastic pocketed glory for our viewing. The walls were dotted with grainy black and white photo’s of the 100 plus year old pub and also the surrounding areas. It kid of felt like we were on the set of neighbours. Old school neighbours. You know in that restaurant where Des worked?
Maybe not.
So all up, I would not recommend you travel hours to visit the Royal Standard Hotel, but if you are in the area you could stop buy. You will probably enjoy yourself if you kind of give over to it all.
You might even get to see Charlene.
