Lady Lavender’s Tea Room Bunyip

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Lady Lavender’s Tea Room in Bunyip.

Lady Lavender's Tea Room Bunyip

I have driven past this timber house set on the hillside so many times on my way to Gippsland. Surrounded by a lovely lavender garden and with rolling hills as the backdrop, the Lady Lavender Tea Rooms serve simple devonshire tea and traditional olde English lunch.

Lady Lavender's Tea Room Bunyip They also have a gift shop featuring their lavender products and a nursery/ gift shop out the back.

The dining room is decked out in traditional floral patterns and prints with antique furniture and decorative art work finishing off the look.

Service was prompt and helpful and the whole experience was a little other worldly.

Jam Face Cafe Adelaide

Jam Face Cafe Adelaide

Jam Face cafe in Adelaide Central Market is the brain child of the fantastically talented Poh Ling Yeow of Master Chef fame. Eat My Street was invited along for a breakfast feast at this adorable little cafe in the heart of the market, as part of the Tasting Australia Words to Go Festival. I was in for a never ending brunch spread in the style of Alice in Wonderland but minus the Matt Hatter.

Jam Face Cafe Adelaide

We all gathered around the cute little timber tables hand-built Poh and Johnno (her husband) and tried the delicious house made granola and yoghurt which had a very pleasing blend of tartness, sweetness, and crunch. This was followed by a skinny flat white that I had been dreaming about all morning and once that was finished my tummy was feeling very happy. Little did I know that there were another 5 courses to follow.

Next we were served Poh’s silken, salty, scrambled eggs. I am calling “best over” on these memorable scrambled eggs. They were so delicious that I frequently have cravings for them and I am still busily experimenting in my own kitchen trying to replicate the dish. (Is it worth taking a flight to eat eggs? Adelaide is a long way away…..)

Jam Face Cafe Adelaide

Next up was the oh so stylish bacon and egg sandwich. This came with an excellent toasted parmesan and thyme crust that served to elevate the dish to next level goodness. Jam Face Cafe Adelaide

Baked beans in their gorgeous little orange pots came fresh from the oven, followed by buttermilk pancakes and then a lavish plate of pastries. Cooking with pastry is Poh’s first love and it certainly showed in the intricate detail of her pastry creations. Jam Face Cafe Adelaide

Jam Face Cafe Adelaide

This was all accompanied by Poh’s own range of cold pressed juices, with interesting combinations such as watermelon strawberry and mint juice and beetroot, lemon and chocolate mint juice.

I really loved my breakfast at Poh’s Jam Face cafe. The classic brunch/ breakfast dishes all had their own unique “plot twists” that made them memorable and excellent. The cafe fit out was cosy and comfortable and imbibed with Poh’s creative flair.

Jam Face Cafe Adelaide

If you already thought Poh was talented (and I am pretty sure that we all do) then wait until you check out her new little cafe. You will delight in its tasty, colourful creations, just like Alice down the rabbit hole.

Happy Eating.

Rusty Water Brewery Phillip Island

Rusty Water Brewery Phillip Island

To celebrate out last night of holidays in beautiful Phillip Island we decided to take ourselves out for dinner. I really do love cooking when I am on holidays but I also love discovering new places and having a break from all that washing up.

I had heard that Rusty Water Brewery were producing some pretty good food and it had been on my must visit list for a while. I also knew that Rust Water Brewery was a fairly family friendly restaurant and so I booked a table.

Dining beachside in Cowes has become a fairly tourist centric game. A lot of the more interesting eateries seem to be cropping up outside of the main street of Cowes. Rusty Water Brewery sits just off the main road, a stones through from the Koala Park and a few other distinct tourist destinations.

The main dining room is very spacious and we were seated in a section that seemed to be dedicated to those eating with their children. There were colouring in books and crayons on the table and a fairly normal kids menu to order off. Service was fine and friendly and the drinks list was fairly comprehensive with a focus on their own local brews.

We tried the Seafood linguine.

The menu here was interesting and much more sophisticated than most other restaurants on the Island. Execution of the menu was pretty good although whoever made my salad was heavy handed with the dressing. Our duck was cooked well which shows there is talent in the kitchen and the kids meals ($10) were all gobbled up.

Overall we had a lovely experience and we all enjoyed our food.

RACV Resort Inverloch

RACV Resort Inverloch

Happy is such a neat emotion,

It’ll give your feet a happy notion.

Wise words from Elmo.

We went camping last weekend. Eek! I am not a big one for camping and I don’t do a lot of it, but is does have a funny way of making everyone happy. Breakfast with the birds, supper under the stars, fresh air flowing all around, and at RACV Resort Inverloch, stunning ocean views. The happiness factor seems to have something to do with simplicity, slowness and time spent together.

IMG_2765

Simple food is part of the equation of course and although I missed spending time baking, one of my favourite things to do on the holidays, I did still have fun coming up with our meals. For supper we bought some delicious locally made jam and sourdough from the RACV resort reception. There was no butter so we had the decadent delight of creamy camembert with fresh strawberry jam on excellent chunks of bread. So perfect and everyone loved it.

After seeing the stunning views of the coastline from the RACV Resort Restaurant we had to visit so we enjoyed dessert there one evening.

2016-02-06 18.18.28

We sampled the Sorbet selection.

Sorbet at RACV Resort Inverloch

Then moved on to the most amazing blueberry butter cake with brandy cream and berry coulis. This cake was creamy perfection and the flavours were offset perfectly by the berries and cream. Delicious.

Cake at the RACV Inverloch resort

The views in the restaurant are really breathtaking. You could visit just to take in the ever-changing endless blues and coastal views. The restaurant itself was also very comfortable and accommodating and the staff were courteous, helpful and friendly.

RACV Inverloch Resort

They offer an excellent sounding “Best of Gippsland” buffet lunch that I would love to return for. It was great to see the very stylish resort embracing local produce and its sense of place.

So visit for the happy tapping, but also for the lovely food and excellent service.

Happy Eating. Dani xx

Polish Rye Crust Bakery

Polish Rye Crust Bakery

Polish Rye Crust Bakery is a simple looking cafe/bakery in the heart of Dandenong selling pretzels. Babka, pierogi, baguette’s, cakes and more, most of which are made fresh on the premises. The bread is made with the kind of patience and attention that most foodies only dream of, using starter culture more than a century old.

Polish Rye Crust Bakery scores a whopping 4.6 out of 5 on the Zomato charts which is how I ended up popping in for a brunch date. A little photo montage on the wall shows that I am not alone in travelling across town for a visit. Previous visitors include Matt Preston and Maeve O’Meara from Food Safari and all with good reason.

We started with coffee.

We also ordered a breakfast bagel which was simply delicious. Or rather simple and delicious. Perfectly textured bagel filled with layers of sliced egg, salad, cream cheese and topped with a sprinkle on sesame seeds. The excellent bagel elevated a simple sandwich to the next level. There was fighting over who would get the last bite. 🙂

Bagel

A sweet little orange butter cake laced with marzipan and topped with orange icing packed a flavour punch that I was not expecting. The icing was pleasantly crumbly and the cake had a lovely texture and excellent, full flavour.

cake

There were so many things on that menu that I would have liked to try. House made pierogi for starters, Babka, Salt stick with pulled pork and coleslaw, plump, shiny donuts, a Reuben sandwich and sauerkraut soup.  The prices were very reasonable with bagels starting at 60 cents, Profiteroles for $2 and breakfast bagels from $3 to $8.50.

I am told this is excellent Polish food and I would have to agree.

A Touch of Dutch Cafe

A touch of dutch cafe Berwick

Ok. So I have been very excited about this post.

I love a touch of Dutch Cafe in Berwick.

I know it does not sound overly loveable, but bear with me (and check out my images). Kitschy goodness in a tree lined village on the South Eastern Melbourne fringe.

So I have to admit up front that I do have Dutch heritage and seeing big glass jars full of  mouth puckering, salty Dutch licorice does make me feel all nostalgic. But I am pretty sure I would enjoy a touch of Dutch even with out the dutch blood running through my veins.

A touch of Dutch Cafe is attached to a kind of general store next door. It is full of themed tea towels, cuckoo clocks and biscuit tins with the face of the outgoing Monarch plastered on them. They also sell jewellery and frozen food and sauerkraut and an astounding number of vegetables in a jar. I love having a wander through, although I am yet to buy anything. On my last visit it was also full of wandering Dutch men with their “ich” laden conversation, smooth burnished skin, dapper trousers and well cut casual jackets.

Back in the Cafe however I found the food to be lovely and interesting and the service to be friendly but professional (my favourite combination- chat to me, but not very much).

There was a whole shelf of dutch cakes that the waitress tells me are made on site. Then there were plenty more options for your average sweet tooth fix. The caramel slice looked quite fetching I have to say. Coffee was good and they seem to show some interest in ensuring it stays that way. My understanding is that the Dutch have been drinking good, strong, fresh coffee for a long time before it became popular here in Melbourne. So while the coffee did not knock my socks off, it has so far been reliably good. Boy have I been to a lot of Cafe’s where that is not true.

We had to eat the poffertjes. Mini dutch pancakes covered in butter and icing sugar.

They are delicious. And moreish. And flluffy and buttery and maybe addictive? I have ordered them every single time.

They are also kind of fun. I’m not sure how. Maybe I am easily amused?

I really recommend you visit. Order a coffee. Maybe have cake or some sauerkraut or even the caramel slice. Then please let me know how it tastes. I don’t think I’ll ever get past ordering the poffertjes.
