Melbourne’s Best Food Bloggers and Writers

Melbourne’s Best Food Bloggers

How do you decide on Melbourne’s Best Food Bloggers I hear you ask?

Well there are a lot of answers to that question these days and many of them can be found on Instagram.

My answer is little more complicated.

To me a good food blog is one that creates its own beautiful, interesting of informative content, posts unique and useful recipes and is reliant on food writing as well as lovely images.

Not many people are actually doing this kind of food blogging these days because it is time-consuming work that requires a lot of passion, creativity, time and commitment.

I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the people who still are blogging about food  and I have visited and read recipes from a lot more of them.

I thought I would compile a list of some of the best food bloggers in Melbourne so that you could find them too.

So here they are in no particular order.

So why not visit some of the smaller wineries of the Yarra Valley on one of the shortest days of the year. I attended two years ago with one of my best friends and all our children and we had such a wonderful day.

It was great to meet the owners of lots of the Yarra Valley’s best wineries and also sample a great range of food. Travel from one venue to the next made it seem like a bit of an adventure (there is a map available to help you plan your day) and it was interesting to see the variety of locations on offer. There was also live music, open fires and the most sensational views.

You can read my full review of my visit to the Yarra Valley’s Shortest Lunch event in 2016. It was such a memorable day visiting a beautiful array of Victorias best wineries.

Eat My Street Cooking Club. June. Traditional Family Recipes.

Eat My Street Cooking Club. June 2018.

Is it that time already?

June is here and along with it, Winter.

I am assured that attitude is everything and so I am determined to embrace winter and look for all its hidden cosy gems although my instinct is to rebel and complain.

So who are we going to cook along with this month?

I started with Robyn Echkardt’s Istanbul and beyond.

Then we moved on last month to Queen Maggie Beer which was serendipitous because she just happened to be all over our TV screens courtesy of Master Chef last month.

So this month I thought we would try something a little different and cook with the theme of “traditional family recipes.”

So, what recipe has been handed down in your family that you still love to cook?

I immediately think of my Mum and Oma’s chicken soup recipe that I regularly make particularly at this time of year. I am also reminded of my Opa’s bread recipe that came all the way from the Netherlands to Australia and this breathtaking Speculaas cake recipe that also came the same way.

Who am I kidding?

I love a traditional family recipe and I use a lot of them so I am going to love this theme.

So what I want to share this month is the traditional family recipes that you use on a regular basis because they are just so good.

Keen?

Great, then cook along with me for June.

I am looking forward to it.

Celebrate World Biscuit Day

World Biscuit Day

May 29th is World Biscuit Day.

I have no idea why and I really can’t find any interesting Australian information on World Biscuit Day, but hey, who care because biscuits are the bizness, right?

Who really needs an excuse to bake a batch of home-made cookies or buy a packet of their favourite sweet, crumbly biscuits?

No one.

So this all leaves me with one important question.

What is your favourite biscuit?

choc-chip cookies for World Biscuit Day

I am a plan shortbread girl myself and I kind of have a soft spot for the ones that come direct from Scotland because they taste like heather and loch ness monster and they taste better, right?

Weirdly, I am not a fan of the Tim Tam though and I am sorry all of Australia.

While you ponder the very important question as to what is your favourite biscuit, let me share some of my favourite biscuit recipes.

Saving the best to last.

  • Filled Speculaas. My families recipe, this is a cross between a cake and a speculaas biscuit and it is full of a kind of homemade marzipan. It is everything.

So, enjoy World Biscuit Day friends.

Maybe share a packet with someone or fill your desk drawer with your favourite brand to enjoy all by yourself.

Or even better, live your best life by biscuit bombing your friends and colleagues tomorrow by leaving a packet of sugary goodness on their desks.

The world will thank you.

Eat My Street online Cooking Club. Maggie Beer.

Hiya, Howdy and Hello.

Welcome to the second instalment of the Eat My Street Online Cooking Club.

So excited to have you join me.

Previously I cooked along to Robyn Eckhardt’s newest book of Turkish cuisine, “Istanbul and Beyond.”

This month I am cooking to the theme of “My favourite TV Chef.”

It is a hard one, because I love a lot of TV chef’s including

  • Gabriel Gate (the classic)
  • Huey Ian Hewitson (the original)
  • Nigella Lawson (the beautiful)
  • Jamie Oliver (the heroic)
  • Ina Garten (the reliable)
  • Maggie Beer (the Queen).

To be honest, I think that as a proud Aussie, I can’t really go past Queen Maggie Beer.

Lovely Maggie and her verjuice.

I visited her farm restaurant years ago and it has stuck in my memory as being so graceful and peaceful and loved.

I have also spent many years watching her “The Cook and the Chef” TV show and I always stop for a rerun when it is on TV again.

She is so patient and persistent and is one of the few Master Chef judges that actually looks understanding and sad for a contestant when they make a dramatic mistake.

Plus she loves her Australian produce and her recipes always work.

So, want to cook along with me?

Chose your favourite Maggie recipe and write about it or take a photo or just let me know how you go?

You can comment here, or on my Facebook page or if you’re a blogger you can even send me your link to add to the post.

Cools?

Weekend Wrap-up

Well hello everyone.

*waves

It has been a while.

I was trawling though the back catalogue on eat my street recently and I realised it has been a really long time since I wrote a general post about life. So inspired by my Blog with Pip friends, I thought I would compose a “taking stock” for April piece.

Because I work in a school, my life is basically formed around the teen week term and two week holiday period, as well as the 5 day week and two day weekend. I think I may even be starting to think in terms of a 6 period day and a little break/ big break/ end of day. It’s funny what you get used to but I certainly  never imagined myself “back at school.”

So April has had some holidays with my kids and some time at work and lots of other busy little moments in between.

Here is what I have been doing.

Making

My own recipes videos. I am definitely in the novice category but it is fun to learn a new skill.

I have also been thinking about making my own wax food clothes after seeing this simple little tutorial.

https://www.1millionwomen.com.au/blog/diy-reusable-beeswax-wraps/

I am a little unsure about how you wash them/ keep them clean so I’m not convinced yet.

Anyone given it a go?

Reading

It has been an excellent month for reading with two different books that I loved.

Force of Nature by Jane Harper and  Americanah by Ghiamanda Ngozi Adiche.

I got lost in both of these books and they made my holiday a richer experience.

You can buy them both with my affiliate link at The Book Depository Australia.

Planting

I have been very busy in my little garden inspired by my son and also the very affordable little Aumanns nursery discovered near my house.

This month I have planted. Cardamom, dill, hot lips, spinach, coriander, Kaffir lime and Vietnamese mint.

Fingers crossed that I can keep it all alive….

Watching

I went to the Peter Rabbit movie with my two little boys and I really enjoyed it. Somehow I have developed a very soft spot for all things Peter Rabbit and the movie did not disappoint me. I even teared up a little, and my son declared it “the best movie ever.”

Cooking

I have been cooking a lot of different things. I always love to experiment and try something new and the school holidays are a great time to give it a go.

Hats off to professional cake makers from me.

  • Bircher museli. Grated apple, fresh blueberries, coconut shards and roasted nuts. This made for a breakfast treat at my house.
  • I also made my own basil pesto with my beautiful crop of fresh basil from the garden, and some homemade marscapone with balsamic roasted figs (another great gluten free breakfast ideas).

Perfecting

My gluten-free repertoire.

I have now converted this egg & bacon pie recipe successfully to gluten-free, as well as my favourite, much-loved brownie recipe. This best ever chocolate cake recipe also works well and has no flour.

Drinking

Too much coffee. Should I cut back? Or should I just drink more? Only time will tell.

Celebrating

My best friends 40th birthday.

What a blessing a good friend is.

Merren and I have been friends for nearly forty years and it made me a little bit emotional to think about how important she has been in my life.

This month I also celebrated 18 years of marriage and a little bit of time away from my three children. Both things were good, but the long dreamed of trip to the Lake House Daylesford was pretty special.

Wondering

What will go on my “40 ways to celebrate turning 40” bucket list for this year.

I am currently at about 24 things that I hope to do, including owning my own apple tree.

What would you add to yours?

Liking

My Woolworth online home delivery service.

It has actually changed my life.

Anyone else dread the weekly grocery shop?

Since I went back to work 4 days a week, and since my children started growing at astronomical rates, I have had to be very organised about food purchasing.

My current solution is to order my groceries on the Saturday and simply pick them up on a Sunday afternoon, ready for my Sunday evening cook off. Preparing all my lunches for the week on the weekend is the only way I can stay healthy.

Lately I have even been receiving a hand written thank you note and a few little chocolates as a gift from my “personal shopper.”

I think the best bit is that I can order absolutely everything I need, with my recipe books right next to me and with no worry about being able to carry what I order.

If you like ordering online too, then please use my affiliate link. Go on. Here it is. Woolworths

Bliss.

Trying

An excellent new restaurant Kazukis in Daylesford. It came highly recommended to me by a fellow food blogger and it did not disappoint. It is not often that food is completely surprising (in a good way) and I honestly experienced flavours that were completely new to me.

I. Loved. it.

Hoping

That camp goes well for my daughter this week.

I will miss her…..

Thinking

About home and lifestyle and my ever present daydream about living in the country. Life is busy and full and I really love where we live but I often have an intense desire to disappear amongst the trees.

Noticing

How good I feel when I visit the countryside. Particularly when the horizon opens up and there are open skies and green space for miles. It has such a soothing effect on me.

I must remember to go more often.

Feeling

Tired and overwhelmed and like I am craving a little bit more white space in my life.

So there it is, my April wrap-up.

I wonder how your April has been?

Here’s to a healthy and happy May.
