The Best Markets in Templestowe and Surrounds

Markets in TemplestoweMarkets in Templestowe and surrounds.

There is nothing I enjoy more than spending my weekend wandering through a gorgeous, local Farmers Market before heading home with a basket full of produce to cook for myself and my family.

Shopping at a Farmers’ Market inspires creativity don’t you think? If you find an authentic local market then you have found the local growers, makers, bakers and creators in your community.

Well I have made it my mission to research, visit and discover as many of the best markets in Templestowe and beyond.

Templestowe is a little gem of a Suburb to live in, with great proximity to the City, its own river frontage, interesting architecture, extensive and sprawling parklands, great shopping and easy access to The Artisan Hills and stunning surrounding Countryside Continue reading

Riddik Cafe Templestowe

Templestowe Lower has a new cafe and boy it’s a good one.

Riddik Cafe Templestowe has opened in what was once the old ANZ Bank building and with tree-lined views of the classic Lower Templestowe street beyond, it is sure to be equally loved by locals and visitors from further afield.

Surprisingly they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have only visited for breakfast so far but I really enjoyed what I tried from the menu and the Code Black coffee was excellent.  The kind of coffee that stays on your mind and demands a revisit. Continue reading

Trotters Bistro Carlton

Trotters Bistro Carlton

Back in its first heyday, my brother-in-law (The Professor) and sister and law used to live and work in Carlton. Whenever they visit us from Canada they love to go back there to visit friends, try out the delicious food on offer and enjoy the general atmosphere.

Most of us who have grown up in Melbourne will probably have some kind of memories of our first visit to Carlton. I remember walking down the street as a 17-year-old, being called out to by the restaurant owners and being very impressed at the cosy and sophisticated ambience of what was going on inside each restaurant. I also fondly remember one of my first boyfriends who was a waiter in Lygon St, which probably couldn’t have impressed this Country girl more.

Well a lot has changed since then and a lot has stayed the same. I still love shopping on Lygon St and visiting the plethora of great restaurants and cafes in the area. The Professor was visiting again recently and so we left it up to him to chose our dining destination. Trotters Bistro in Lygon St it was.

First impressions were that Trotters Bistro was one of those first wave restaurants that have lasted the test of time. Cosy corners, moody lighting, dark timber walls and friendly greetings at the door started things off  well. The menu has a long list of reliable favourites which is something to be impressed with in this day and age of spectacular Instagram hopeful “good looking” dishes.

Having 6 of us in the group meant we had ample opportunity to really sample the brunch menu (although the lunch specials looked very tempting too).

The breakfast burger with house made hash brown and delicious chutney.

Eggs Benedict with Dr Marty’s crumpets, hollandaise and smoked ham. The smoked ham deserves a special mention as having a very smokey, delicious flavour.

We all enjoyed our brunch in Carlton. Service was friendly and although I didn’t love my coffee, everything else was reliably good.

Visit Trotters Bistro Carlton for time-honoured dishes served in a classic Lygon street bistro. If you are looking for gluten-free meals, you might be particularly keen to visit as they have a great selection.

Special mention goes to the wall full of antique/ vintage disassembled timber boxes which I could have stared at happily all morning.

Happy Eating.

Bistro Guillaume Melbourne

Bistro Guillaume MelbourneBistro Guillaume Melbourne is a classic French restaurant modelled on France’s popular neighbourhood bistros but sitting swankily alongside the Yarra here in our very own Melbourne.Bistro Guillaume Melbourne

The lime green colour scheme is the first thing you will notice when you approach Bistro Guillaume and it sets the scene for a dining experience that does not follow along with the trends, rather walks its own jaunty journey par excellence.

If you are not already in love with the riverside view and on point brisk but embracing service, then  the decor will capture your heart like a dashing French mademoiselle looking sweetly at you from under her thick long lashes.

Then the food will sweep you away.

The Roquefort soufflé is a cheese lovers delight. Light, fluffy and intensely creamy all at once with a perfect side serve of cress, apple and walnuts as an accompaniment. I am often trying to find an equal to my favourite ever dish of Goats Cheese Soufflé from Donovans in St Kilda which I ate a decade or so ago and Bistro Guillaume’s souffle comes daringly close.

A beetroot tart with goats cheese feta and horseradish demonstrates a similar philosophy in the kitchen of beautiful ingredients perfectly paired with lavish restraint and skill I can only dream of. The thin, buttery tart shell was uniquely memorable and I am sure, very hard to replicate.Bistro Guillaume Melbourne

Roast chicken with Paris mash was an outstanding dish and easily the most delicious roast chicken I have ever eaten (sorry Mum). I have since discovered that the recipe for Paris Mash includes a whole lot of butter and only a modicum of potato, but no bother, it was the chicken that really shone in this dish anyway.   Succulent, crispy-skin perfection with an outstanding jus drizzled all around.

There was little room for dessert but we ordered it anyway because who can resist a profiterole with vanilla bean ice cream and chocolate sauce?

Our waitress was helpful and of my favourite waitstaff breed. There, but not there if you know what I mean. Never intrusive and yet when I went to reach for the wrong knife during entrée there she suddenly was under my right arm proffering me the correct utensil. She also added a sprinkling of authenticity by way of a lovely French accent but I don’t think it would have mattered either way. She recommended the right wine and kept a rather rowdy table of business men in order and facilitated our dining experience with dry humour and helpfulness.

Visit for the perfect riverside Melbourne dining experience and food that you will remember long after you leave.

Middle Eastern Restaurant Souk Opens in Melbourne

decor at Middle Eastern Restaurant SoukThis week saw the opening of an exciting new restaurant in Bligh Place, just off Flinders Lane, serving fresh, modern flavours from North Africa, Anatolia and the Middle East. Middle Eastern Restaurant Souk

Eat My Street was invited along on behalf of the Australian Good Food and Travel Guide, for the opening night. On arrival we were greeted with the “Omar Sharif” cocktail. Pink fairy floss and rose petals atop an elixir of gin, citrus mastic. orgeat and rose water. This delicious and gorgeous drink set the tone for the dinner ahead. There are four other Arabian style cocktails to chose from, including “Aladdin’s Mistress” with Moroccan green iced tea, crushed cardamom pods, rum and mint.fairy floss cocktail at Middle Eastern Restaurant Soukcocktails at Middle Eastern Restaurant Souk

The venue was recently redeveloped by Ergun Elmas (of Elsternwick’s Arabesque) and business partner Vlad Kovacevic and it spans two levels of neon pink and grey gorgeousness offset with striking artwork. Head Chef Rogelio Almanza, comes to Souk via Mexico, America and Japan and seems to have a deft hand when it comes to bringing a little extra kick and sizzle to the flavours on the plate.

To the food. Prawn falafel with smoked black tahini and chipotle hummus with burnt butter and paprika were the opening gambits. Both dishes delivered a fresh take on classic, much loved dishes. I enjoyed the extra dimension that the chipotle and burnt butter brought to the hummus and the prawn falafel had a great depth and intricacy of flavour.chefs at Middle Eastern Restaurant Soukfalafel at Middle Eastern Restaurant Souk

The Kuwaiti Fried Chicken (KFC) was another highlight that packed a big punch of flavour. These little crunchy chicken ribs were fried in harissa and paprika breadcrumbs and I  could have eaten a lot more.Middle Eastern Restaurant Souk

The Turkish Tabouleh with sumac, mint cucumber, mild chillies and roasted pine nuts provided a fresh and zesty interlude for our palates and demonstrates a thoughtful approach to menu design.Middle Eastern Restaurant Souk

Next up was the perfectly tender charcoal octopus which was served with muhammara sauce and roasted potato.

The Chicken and Apricot Kofta continued the theme of giant flavours in small sizes, and it was served on a roasted lemongrass stick that permeated the juicy meatball perfectly.

Dessert was a slow cooked black tapioca pearls in sweet turkish coffee cream.  This dish offered a perfect balance of sweet and bitter, crunch and cream. The  slippery luxuriousness of the tapioca balls were brought to life with the clean, crispness of the coffee. The crowning jewell of berries added the perfect burst of fresh sweetness and deep friend tapioca added crunch. I liked this dessert very much.

Middle Eastern Restaurant SoukVisit Souk for the excellent food that is full of exciting flavours , the modish setting, great service and of course, cocktails to remember.

Eat’aliano by Pino

Eat’aliano by Pino

There is nothing more perfect than beautiful Italian food on a cold Wintery night, so last week I was very excited to be invited to the opening of Eat’aliano by Pino. I painted my nails and put my high heels on and headed out for some beautiful Italian food.

FullSizeRender

Eat’aliano by Pino is a newly opened Italian restaurant in High Street Windsor serving traditional Italian antipasti, pizza, pasta, salad and desserts all accompanied by a killer drinks list.

FullSizeRender

The opening night was busy and buzzing. There were two talented little DJ’s and even a celebrity or two to keep me impressed in between bites of food. The pizza was cooked in a cranking hot wood fired stove which produces an excellent chewy but crunchy base (the perfect combo). The lovely Suppli all romana, Breosola and other assorted antipasto items on the Eat’aliano menu were also delicious and I am told that the Nutella Pizza was sweet, gooey perfection.

2016-05-23 19.57.56

The restaurant has had a modern, chic fit-out tempered beautifully by warm Italian touches such as an open kitchen with a stunning white-tiled wood-fired pizza oven, a bespoke drinks area and a display of cured meats.

2016-05-23 19.57.41

I had a great night at the opening of this great little Italian gem of a restaurant and I can’t wait to go back.

Happy Eating.

Shuki & Louisa’s Very Good Falafel

Shuki & Louisa Very Good Falafel

with guest blogger Amy

Shuki & Louisa Very Good Falafel

Instagram is dangerous. It preaches perfection: perfectly runny yolks (hashtag eggporn), perfectly messy post workout top-knots (hashtag fitspo), perfectly pouted lips (hashtag makeupfreefriday), perfect sun drenched beaches (hashtag fromwhereyoudratherbe) and otherwise perfect lies— oops! I meant lives. Instagram is not only full of only the highlights of our existence but these are also filtered and edited beyond recognition and reality.

I’m not making any judgements- I am a big fan of Insta, I love scrolling mindlessly through my feed and seeing all the delicious food, divine holiday destinations and my lovely friends’ latest updates on their lives— and I love posting my own. I post #workoutselfies and #foodporn with the best of them but I want to be clear, my Instagram is not my entire life and the bits I post are the highlight reel.

Instagram is also dangerous because it makes me want to spend much too much money and drive far out of my way to find something that promises to be good. You already know how passionate I get about things (beetroot, buckwheat… Bloom) and so it really shouldn’t surprise you that I would be willing to drive an hour to get falafels when an Instagram post informs me that the best falafel makers in Melbourne have opened their very own shop.

Shuki and Louisa are two friends who sell their Very Good Falafel at markets all across Melbourne and I stumbled across their delicious dips and flavour filled falafel at my local farmer’s market last year. When it was announced via the afore discussed app that these two lovely people were moving into a little shop on Sydney Road, I knew I had to get there as soon as possible.

Shuki & Louisa Very Good Falafel

Luckily, I have a fellow-falafel obsessed friend who was also in fits of excitement regarding this new opening and it was her birthday today! So, we trooped off to Brunswick and were soon rewarded with a plethora of options. Falafels are just the beginning at their new store, served in either the pita pocket I fell in love with or plate style with all the fixings. They also serve Sibeh (an eggplant and potato dish) and Ktzizot (a lamb kofte dish) along with salad plates, babaganous, hummus and a traditional sweet dish.

Sarah and I chose to have the salad plate with 3 falafels and a Sibeh plate between us.

Shuki & Louisa Very Good Falafel

It had been a while since the last time for either of us and these two dishes absolutely lived up to our remembered expectations. The eggplant melted in our mouths and the salads were fresh, interesting and vibrant. Our empty plates were testament to the care this pair put into their food.

Now, I’m a fan of Middle Eastern food; I love the flavours, the stories and the cooking methods, so I enjoy most falafels. But these ones? They were crispy, light and bursting with the flavours I adore.

The pita was fluffy and soaked up the divine sauces that complimented the fresh salad and homemade pickles excellently.

Shuki and Louisa themselves, like two excited school children, were absolutely beaming as they rushed about their new home and delightedly explained the new options we had to choose from. This shop, like their market stalls, are truly a labour of love for them and this passion shone through their food, friendliness and the beautiful shop itself.

Shuki & Louisa Very Good Falafel

Instagram may cloud our view of reality with a rose-tinted haze a lot of the time, but some places really deliver on their promise.  Shuki and Luisa’s Very Good Falafel is one of those. What you see is what you get and what you taste will force you to agree that their pitas and plates hashtag neednofilter.

Happy Eating.

One Fine Day in Beaconsfield

FullSizeRender

Beaconsfield just keeps getting better and its latest darling is the busy little cafe One Fine Day.

Spooned gracefully into the long, narrow space that Corridor used to occupy, One Fine Day is a cafe with an interesting brunch and lunch menu and a gorgeous array of delicious menu items.

One Fine Day has been very busy since it first opened a few months ago and space inside the tiny cafe is quite limited, but they do have a nice little courtyard space out the back for sunny days. I had the pleasure of visiting with my Eat My Street’s gorgeous recipe creator, Sharon and we managed to snaffle a seat inside.

First impressions were good.

FullSizeRender

Take a look at the One Fine Day Facebook page to keep up to date with their absolutely decadent and delicious selection of amazing muffin specials. These cherry ripe muffins look amazing but the caramello muffins- with a full sized caramello koala perched on top-  are now on my wish list. A perfect hump day 3pm snack I say!

Menu items include avocado smash, Acai smoothie bowls, banana bread, a selection of raw food treats, eggs on toast, Dr Martys crumpets and much more.

FullSizeRender

I tried the White peony tea which came in a pot and was smooth, crisp and delicious. Sharon sampled the coffee and gave it the Eat My Street tick of approval.

FullSizeRender

One Fine Day is a lovely little addition to the Beaconsfield area and its instant popularity is no surprise. The food is thoughtful and spans the divide of healthy options and decadent treats. The staff were friendly and helpful and if you can snare yourself a table this is a great little spot for brunch or lunch.

Otherwise why not order a take away coffee through that front window and grab a muffin to go. Your friends will thank you.

Happy Eating.

The French Saloon Melbourne

The French Saloon

The French SaloonIt is a long and complicated story that will probably never be told but I was this close to moving to Paris last year.

That dream has now been postponed and instead I find myself on a Friday night, eating in a gorgeous little French restaurant in the worlds most liveable city, Melbourne.

The French Saloon is the latest restaurant to open under the direction of Ian Curley: Chef extraordinaire and food empire building Godfather of the Melbourne dining scene.

Chef Todd Moses has come across from Supernormal to cook perfect, simple, French bistro style meals under the direction of executive Chef Ian Curley. When I say simple, I mean French simple, meaning excellent, well-chosen ingredients and dishes made with skill and precision in a classic way. Simple,  but definitely not simple, if you know what I mean.

The A La Carte menu is divided into “to begin” “to continue” “steak” “mains” “sides” “cheese” and “dessert.” With all that choice what is a girl to do but agree to receive direction from her charming and helpful French waiter. I was very keen to save myself for cheese and dessert courses so we went straight to the mains.

John Dory with cauliflower puree was perfection on a plate with great balance between beautiful flavours; creamy cauliflower puree, soft subtle fish with a gently seared crust, and a gently acidic sauce to drown it all in.

My partner ordered the Steak Frites with Roquefort butter and he was equally smitten with the flavours on his plate.

The French Saloon

We shared a side of the specials menu which was slippery jack mushrooms with artichoke two ways. This was a very decadent, creamy and delicious dish that we both enjoyed.

Then we moved onto the cheese course which was served with a little jar of honey and its honeycomb from a local rooftop beekeeper. This honey carried a lot of flavour and was a delicious accompaniment to the three styles of cheese we chose of the menu.

The French Saloon

For dessert we were moved to the beautiful zinc bar that stretches its way down one side of the room. I am told that this fabulous bar was imported directly from France and it was certainly a great juxtaposition to the red timber pitched room and simplicity of the rustic timber floors and white painted window frames of the rest of the room. Tres chic.

The French Saloon

Creme brûlée with chocolate Madeleine.

The John Dory and Artichoke side dish both take equal honours as my favourite dish of the year so far.

Service was excellent and did not really miss a beat  with our gorgeous and knowledgeable waiter charming us from the moment we arrived.

Visit the French Saloon for intimate, old-school dining in a gorgeous setting with food that will make you forget you are not far from home.

Happy Eating.

D.O.C. Pizza and Mozzarella Bar

D.O.C. Pizza

D.O.C. Pizza and Mozzarella Bar is Melbourne pizza at its best. Opened in 2007 D.O.C. Pizza and Mozzarella Bar was at the centre of the pizza revolution that Melbourne had to have. Gone were the thick doughy pizza bases covered in shredded spam and plastic cheese and in their place was the light, chewy pizza bases covered in a few simple and excellent ingredients. Prosciutto, artisan mozzarella, rich and fragrant tomato covered bases.  This is pizza as the Italians created it and finally it could be found in Melbourne.

At D.O.C. Pizza bar in Melbourne you can also eat your excellent pizza curb-side and have it served to you by charming Italian wait staff. This is a very busy restaurant with a no booking policy but no one seems to mind. Join the consistently moving queue on the pavement outside this gorgeous Drummond Street building and indulge in a little people watching until it is your turn to grab a seat. You won’t regret the wait because the menu is that good.
