The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

I was kindly invited to visit the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville for brunch and to write a review. Seeing as I love this part of Melbourne, and I knew that the awesome Seville Water Play park was just across the road, I decided to head out on a Saturday morning with the kids in tow.The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville
Natasha is the owner of the Old Butcher Shop Cafe and she was confidently driving the coffee machine for a busy and enthusiastic crowd of regulars and locals when I arrived. The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville
Natasha is having something of a tree change in her life, after leaving her corporate job in the City three years ago to pursue her dream of running a great cafe in her home town. Natasha’s Mum is chief butcher in charge of the old butcher shop from where the cafe takes its name. They have moved down the road now to a larger premises but Natasha just knew that the old building had a lot of promise as a cafe so she set about renovating it into a cafe that she would love to eat at. I think she has done a great job.

Long and narrow with an original exposed brick wall running down one side and windows that look out onto the street at the front, the cafe has a lot of warmth and charm. Add to this the display of art by a local artist and the cosy atmosphere is complete. The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

Natasha is serving Wow blend coffee ($3.50) which is from a small local company run by a husband and wife team from the Yarra Valley. Beans are roasted here locally but are imported originally from their family run company in Indonesia.

They also serve Tea Drop teas.

I was also a little smitten with their very smart takeaway cups by Live & Give, with proceeds from each purchase going to support charity. coffee at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

To the food. Breakfast is all day (kitchen closes at 3pm) and includes eggs benedict ($17.50), hash stack ($18) or the amazing sounding tasters board ($18) with mini granola and baked rhubarb, smashed avo on toast, poached egg, warm croissant, house made jam & an orange juice.

I was very tempted to order the delicious sounding lamington pancakes (house made pancakes, raspberry compote, milk chocolate ganache and shaved coconut flakes)  but in the end could not resist the look of the butchers breakfast board. Eggs your way, bacon, herb roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, saganaki, avocado, house made potato hash (very good) relish and organic sourdough toast. brunch at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

The delicious thick cut bacon was smoky and full or flavour and like the sausages, come straight from the family butcher shop.

There is also a lunch menu and a very decent kids menu to keep the littlies happy.pancakes at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Sevillemilkshake at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

Overall I found the Old Butcher Shop Cafe to be a bit of a hidden gem, serving decent honest food with warmth and hospitality and unexpected touches of good.banana bread at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

Pop in on your way to a winery or have a wander and check out some of the local offerings (wineries and cherry /berry picking are all close by).

The Full Pantry Store and Cafe Review

The Full Pantry Store and Cafe

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a teacher in possession of a new curriculum is in want of a gigantic cup of tea.

Every so often in the life of a teacher there comes a time when the powers that be decide to change the entire VCE curriculum of a certain subject, requiring a huge overhaul of texts, teaching activities and teaching program.

The Butter Kitchen Gembrook Butter Kitchen Gembrook review

Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Liza from The Butter Kitchen Gembrook. Liza is a local foodie and cook and she has started a small business making home baked goods for delivery in the local area. These are not just any old home baked goods though, Liza really knows how to cook and her products, including cakes, cookies, brownies and dessert pies are made with the most luxurious ingredients and also I think a little bit of tender loving care.

Berry and Cherry Farms to visit this Summer

The best farm gate and u-picks for Summer
Berry picking is a Summer ritual for my family, heralding all that is good about Summer in Melbourne and also ensuring we have a bejewelled table come Christmas Day.
I have complied a little list of the cherry and berry farms in the surrounding areas.
Most farms will charge you entry as well as for the fruit you pick. Normally around $5 to $15.
There are also a few that only sell at local markets such as Fleming Berries so keep an eye on those market dates.
Just click on the name of the Farm for more information and to go direct to their website.
Happy Picking!

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

I was recently invited to lunch by the lovely staff at Forest Edge Restaurant.

Set amidst the rolling green hills in Gembrook sits Forest Edge Restaurant. A beautiful, family run restaurant set on 65 acres of fresh farming land.  The venue operates as a fine dining restaurant, a more casual pizza and wine bar and importantly, a beautiful venue for weddings.

I had driven past the turn off to Forest Edge Restaurant on a number of occasions and I had also been told by locals that this was a “must visit” restaurant, so a visit was high on my wish list. Last week I finally got to visit.

As soon as a I stepped out of the car I was glad I had made the trip.

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

The scenery was stunning.

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

Forest Edge is owned by locals Rob and Bev and the restaurant is run by  chef Benjamin Smith. Nicole Cashman, the marketing and events coordinator was my host for the day and she heads up a very happy and welcoming staff team.

The dining room is beautifully decorated with a backdrop of floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the surrounding hills. The day I visited was  sunny and pristine, although I am told that a visit in Winter is also well worth the trip for the swirling fog and constantly changing vistas.

Now to the food.

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

For entree we had a Chef’s tasting plate. How gorgeous does it look? This was one of those moments where you eat first with your eyes.

Pork, scallops and carpaccio of eye fillet of beef, all of it delicious.

The addition to the pork of the apple and chilli jelly and the apple and olive salsa cut right through the richness of the slow cooked pork and created a beautifully balanced and interesting dish. This attention to detail was repeated with the scallops (pickled ginger, avocado cream) and beef (parmesan crumb, horseradish aioli , parmesan and truffle oil crisp). Creating a very memorable  and well-balanced entree.

Next up was mains.

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

Scotch Fillet of Beef, Maple Braised Baby Leeks, Beetroot Puree, Horseradish Cream & Red Wine Sauce .

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

Slow Cooked Lamb Rump, Hazelnut Purée, Kipfler Potato, Baby Zucchini, Parmesan Crumb.

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

Slow Cooked Pork Tenderloin, Pear Purée, Broccoli & Prune Sauce.

I had to have a little taste of every dish (research of course) and they were all very good. I think that pork tenderloin was probably my favourite as it was light and zesty with the pear puree adding a lovely contrast to the pork.

Main dishes range in price from $32 to $40.  Pizza in the more casual bar space is priced from $12 to $18.

The desert menu was just gorgeous and featured a lovely cheese selection which is normally my dream pick. But this time I was in the mood for something sweet.

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

White Chocolate Panna Cotta, Berry Compote, Balsamic  and Chocolate Parfait, Toasted Custard, Cocoa Soil & Raspberry Yoghurt Sorbet.

The toasted custard was new to me and it was so delicious.

We shared two desserts between us, but to be honest the whole dessert menu was amazing. I think I may still be harbouring a little regret for not tasting that beetroot and chocolate brownie.

IMG_6142

We had lunch in the main dining room but I could not resist taking a peek at the more casual pizza and wine bar.  This was a busy little area and with good reason. The pizza menu sounded delicious and the views from the deck were breath-taking.

There was also live music playing and I am told they also regularly host a Thursday night open mic night.

Forest Edge Restaurant Gembrook

I thoroughly recommend a visit to Forest Edge Restaurant, or even better, book your next birthday celebration there. The views will astound, the food will leave you feeling satisfied and the lovely staff will ensure you leave with a smile on your face.

Meet the Chef

IMG_0763

Benjamin Smith is the executive Chef at Forest Edge Restaurant. Originally from Kent, in the South East corner of England, Ben moved to Australia in 2003.

The story of how he ended up at Forest Edge Restaurant is a bit of a romantic one. Ben and his wife held their wedding at the restaurant and he loved it so much that not  too long after, he started there as Head Chef.

He is a true convert to the Hills lifestyle and spoke to Dani  about his love for the beautiful rolling hills of Gembrook and his joy at working in a restaurant with such gorgeous views from the kitchen.

1. Favourite dish to cook?

My favourite dish to cook is one I recreate at home nearly every Christmas. It’s a simple dish but packed with flavour. I put it in the oven in the morning and it is ready to be served when I get home from work that afternoon.
I serve it with mograbeih, sultanas and almond salad.

Click here to find Ben’s recipe for Wet Roasted Lamb Shoulder.

2. Name a Chef who inspires you?

I take my inspiration from many places, chefs, journeys and travels…

If I was to name one chef who I find inspirational however, it would be Spencer Patrick from Harrisons in Port Douglas. His vision and ethics are outstanding.

3. Favourite local cafe?

My favourite local Cafe would be the General Store in Emerald. Great coffee, spot on tasty food and unpretentious atmosphere.

4. The first dish you ever cooked?

The first dish I ever cooked commercially was chickpea falafels with a tabouli salad.

5. What do you love about the local area?

What’s not to love!?

Waking up to the sound of kookaburras, the wind in the trees. Also the local produce that is on offer in abundance in these Hills is unbelievable. I am definitely a convert to the hill life!

Evolve Fair Food Store

I have had a lot of local people tell me that they love Evolve Fair Food Store in Belgrave. The cafe sits just outside of the main township of Belgrave in what was once a Blacksmith’s studio.

IMG_4378

It has now truly transformed into an inviting, modern and slightly bohemian cafe, in all the right ways. Local art work adorns the walls and artisanal produce is available for purchase in one of the rooms. The food is organic, locally sourced, eco-friendly and health conscious. To just focus on these traits though would be to miss the whole experience. Evolve Fair Food store is “fair” in a unique and wonderful way, but it is also delicious, beautiful, thoughtful and warm.

Evolve Fair Food Store

Visit for brunch or lunch and try a  burger, baguette or omelette. Morning and afternoon tea options are include organic scones ($10) and wheat free banana bread ($12). There are also a gluten-free, vegan and raw food options available.  You can take a look at the menu by clicking here.

Eggs at Evolve Fair Food Store

Two free range eggs on sourdough toast. $10

Importantly for some of us, there is also a lovely child friendly room at the back of the cafe filled with toys, books and plenty of space for children. There is also a Kids Menu featuring the sort of health conscious and tasty food that every Mum dreams about.

Kids Menu Evolve Fair Food store

Tea is Organic Yarra Valley Leaf tea ($4 a pot)  and coffee is from Proud Mary ($4- $6).

Coffee Evolve Fair food store

Service is friendly and helpful and the staff here seem to give off the vibe that they are enjoying their day. The location at the base of Sherbrooke Forest is gorgeous.

It is hard to sum up Evolve Fair Food store because it is a cafe that does so much. I think it is in a very unique position of offering health conscious, fair trade, ethically sourced and delicious food. Maybe this level of thoughtfulness and committment explains why it holds such a special place in the hearts of locals.

The Independent Gembrook

The Independent Gembrook

Tonight we took a beautiful drive through the Yarra Ranges to the visit The Independent restaurant in Gembrook. You can read about my previous visit here, but I thought a little update was in order.

The Independent Gembrook

Set in a former hardware store in the main street of Gembrook, The Independent is co-owned by Chef Mauro Callegari and the family behind Robert Gordon pottery. They serve Argentinian food in a large, open dining hall with exposed timber beams and a sweet little view out onto the street.

view onto street The Independent Gembrook

To find it you have to take a sweeping drive through the surrounding hills, to end up in the tiny little town of Gembrook, home to the iconic Puffing Billy railway. Consider the drive through rolling green pastures a part of the overall experience and you might just have yourself a refreshing mini- break in the country. There are a lot of good things to do out this way, most of which will leave you feeling recharged and reconnected.

Shared plates at the Independent Gembrook

The menu is based around shared plates and tapas style food. The wine list has a few local offerings as well as their Argentinian counterparts. Service was prompt, enthusiastic and solicitous this time around. We ordered the shoulder of lamb to share ($59) which was served with a Beetroot dish with smoked yoghurt & pine nuts. We had to allow half an hour for he lamb to be cooked, but when it arrived it was smoky, sweet and falling off the bone. Well worth the wait.

The half hour wait was also a great excuse to order some of the smaller dishes to share.

Twice smoked crumbed pork belly log, $18

Grilled chorizo with capsicum, prunes & chimmichurri $12

Roasted potatoes with onion, garlic & thyme  $11

The Independent Gembrook

Overall the food was interesting and full of salty, spicy flavours. The restaurant was busy and was run by a team who seemed to know how to manage the bustling space without trouble. Casual yet stylish Argentinian-Australian dining at its best.

Happy Eating.

The General Food Store Emerald

Today was a perfect day for coffee at one of my favourite cafes, The General Food Store Emerald.

The sun was shining, the breeze was fresh, the scent of Spring was in the air. I knew that a drive through those hills would inspire me.

The General Food Store Emerald

The General Food Store has had a make over of sorts.

The General Food Store Emerald

A few things that I love.

  • Their monthly newsletter on the wall with announcement of local events, seasonal produce etc.
  • Regularly changing art work in the cafe, featuring local artists. Today I was struck by the beauty of a photo of Emerald Lake Park at night. So stunning.
  • A reliably great cup of coffee.
  • Small but excellent menu.
  • Engaging staff.

The General Food Store Emerald

Cafes are our modern-day watering holes. Slurp, slurp, tsk, tsk.

The General Food Store seems to be the go-to place for a lot of Emerald locals and it is always busy.

I ordered eggs on toast $10. The lovely, chewy, crunchy sourdough made me very happy.

There was also a cabinet full of delicious looking cakes and slices. Some were gluten-free, some were low sugar, some were just the way Grandma made them.

cakesThe General Food Store menu still offers two different styles of baguette $11.50, French lentil soup $10, house-made granola $11.50 and more. Check out the full menu, which changes with the Seasons, here.

I think that the General Food Store could be one of your favourite cafes too, even if you are not local.

Take a drive through the sweeping Dandenong Ranges, feel your cares slip away as the road climbs higher, let the gorgeous green spaces sing you a lullaby and the majestic trees, whisper their secret.

Keep an eye on the General Food Store Facebook page if you would like to be notified of special events or night time dining options. While you are there, please visit the Eat My Street Facebook page too, and say hello. I’d love to see you stop by and I appreciate your support.

Cockatoo Country Market

Cockatoo Country Market
eatmystreet.net

This article is written by Eat My Street, but first appeared in the newspaper The Local.

The very first Cockatoo Country Market was held on Saturday 7th of March. Launched by locals, Tanya Burmeister and Owen Doppler, the artisan market is proudly “local” with all goods being grown, produced or made by the stall holders.

Market stall at cockatoo country market
eatmystreet.net

Owen and Tanya launched the market in a bid to drive more tourist traffic through their beloved  town of Cockatoo and to build an increased sense of community identity. The market is run by a committee of volunteers and they hope to eventually be able to return profits made back to local community groups.

I wound my way through the scenic hills early on the Saturday morning to find myself there for the “official opening” of the market by Mayor Leticia Wilmott and Councillor Brett Owen. The local fire brigade were also there provide a happy backdrop to the official cutting of the ribbon.

This is a market that is embedded firmly in its locale and the presence of the fire brigade only served to cement that feeling. Stall holders and dignitaries all gathered together at 8.45 to officially launch the market and there was a fantastic energy in the crowd.

Stall holders included Cockatoo Creek Farm Produce, Embellished Cakes, Leanne’s Custom Pots, Olivetto Estate, Emmabrooke Images, Grantelle Creative Scrap Metal Sculptures, Dog gone Healthy Dog treats and many more.

As I made my way around the market I got chatting to the lovely Marina from Blackwood and Leverett. Marina has recently found herself finishing up work and has decided to pursue her hobby of making beautifully coloured jewellery and ceramics. Marina lives in Cockatoo and so the launch of Cockatoo Country Market came at exactly the right time to assist her pursue her hobby. Stop by her stall for a visit at the next market and I am sure you will have trouble leaving without buying a little something for your home.

Overall this was a fantastic market with a good mix of stalls. It is ably assisted by the stunning backdrop of Cockatoo Creek, the surrounding pristine mountain range and even the ever popular Puffing Billy on occasion.

The gorgeous Moss View. The sterling silver jewellery is made with real bird feathers.

When Tanya and Owen first came up with the idea of the Market 9 months ago, they hope that it would help bring their local community together to network and socialise and show off what their naturally beautiful town had to offer.  With more than 900 people coming through the gates on market day, I think they can confidently say they have achieved that.
