  • Mushroom arancini with rocket, parmesan & shaved fennel salad (V) $15.

To purchase tickets or view a full copy of the menu at each winery you can visit

www.yarravalleysmallerwineries.com.au

So why not visit some of the smaller wineries of the Yarra Valley on one of the shortest days of the year. I attended two years ago with one of my best friends and all our children and we had such a wonderful day.

It was great to meet the owners of lots of the Yarra Valley’s best wineries and also sample a great range of food. Travel from one venue to the next made it seem like a bit of an adventure (there is a map available to help you plan your day) and it was interesting to see the variety of locations on offer. There was also live music, open fires and the most sensational views.

You can read my full review of my visit to the Yarra Valley’s Shortest Lunch event in 2016. It was such a memorable day visiting a beautiful array of Victorias best wineries.

The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

I was kindly invited to visit the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville for brunch and to write a review. Seeing as I love this part of Melbourne, and I knew that the awesome Seville Water Play park was just across the road, I decided to head out on a Saturday morning with the kids in tow.The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville
Natasha is the owner of the Old Butcher Shop Cafe and she was confidently driving the coffee machine for a busy and enthusiastic crowd of regulars and locals when I arrived. The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville
Natasha is having something of a tree change in her life, after leaving her corporate job in the City three years ago to pursue her dream of running a great cafe in her home town. Natasha’s Mum is chief butcher in charge of the old butcher shop from where the cafe takes its name. They have moved down the road now to a larger premises but Natasha just knew that the old building had a lot of promise as a cafe so she set about renovating it into a cafe that she would love to eat at. I think she has done a great job.

Long and narrow with an original exposed brick wall running down one side and windows that look out onto the street at the front, the cafe has a lot of warmth and charm. Add to this the display of art by a local artist and the cosy atmosphere is complete. The Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

Natasha is serving Wow blend coffee ($3.50) which is from a small local company run by a husband and wife team from the Yarra Valley. Beans are roasted here locally but are imported originally from their family run company in Indonesia.

They also serve Tea Drop teas.

I was also a little smitten with their very smart takeaway cups by Live & Give, with proceeds from each purchase going to support charity. coffee at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

To the food. Breakfast is all day (kitchen closes at 3pm) and includes eggs benedict ($17.50), hash stack ($18) or the amazing sounding tasters board ($18) with mini granola and baked rhubarb, smashed avo on toast, poached egg, warm croissant, house made jam & an orange juice.

I was very tempted to order the delicious sounding lamington pancakes (house made pancakes, raspberry compote, milk chocolate ganache and shaved coconut flakes)  but in the end could not resist the look of the butchers breakfast board. Eggs your way, bacon, herb roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, saganaki, avocado, house made potato hash (very good) relish and organic sourdough toast. brunch at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

The delicious thick cut bacon was smoky and full or flavour and like the sausages, come straight from the family butcher shop.

There is also a lunch menu and a very decent kids menu to keep the littlies happy.pancakes at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Sevillemilkshake at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

Overall I found the Old Butcher Shop Cafe to be a bit of a hidden gem, serving decent honest food with warmth and hospitality and unexpected touches of good.banana bread at the Old Butcher Shop Cafe Seville

Pop in on your way to a winery or have a wander and check out some of the local offerings (wineries and cherry /berry picking are all close by).

Berry and Cherry Farms to visit this Summer

The best farm gate and u-picks for Summer
Berry picking is a Summer ritual for my family, heralding all that is good about Summer in Melbourne and also ensuring we have a bejewelled table come Christmas Day.
I have complied a little list of the cherry and berry farms in the surrounding areas.
Most farms will charge you entry as well as for the fruit you pick. Normally around $5 to $15.
There are also a few that only sell at local markets such as Fleming Berries so keep an eye on those market dates.
Just click on the name of the Farm for more information and to go direct to their website.
Happy Picking!

Yarra Valley Balloon Festival

The Yarra Valley Balloon Festival 2015.

Yarra Valley Balloon Festival

I was invited by Yarra Ranges Tourism to attend the inaugural Yarra Valley Balloon Festival at the Yarra Valley Racing Club. Following immediately on from the Cox Plate Day race meeting, the event kicked off with a (ticketed) cocktail party with scenic views overlooking the track. Other highlights of the event included.

  • a parachute jump display Yarra Valley Ballon Festival
  • build your own lanterns for the first 200 children
  • free children’s activities
  • fireworks to conclude the evening
  • Vintage Plane Fly-by & Acrobatic display
  • Yarra Glen CFA Demonstration

The absolute highlight of the evening was the coordinated balloon night glow. Thirteen hot air balloons all lit up at once on the racing track. It was a spectacular sight.

IMG_0251

The balloons were majestic and magnificent.

This was a two day festival and Sunday morning saw the balloons launch and take in scenic flights across the Yarra Valley.

Visit http://www.yarravalleyracing.com.au/yarra-valley-balloon-festival for more information.

It was a great night and if you were not sure about attending this year, then I can recommend you do give it a try next year.

Round Bird Can’t Fly

Round Bird Can’t Fly in Lilydale

On the Main street of Lilydale presides the propitiously named cafe, Round Bird Can’t Fly. If the cute little name does not win you over, then the decor will. Round Bird Cant Fly is all gleaming whites and copper tones, bedecked in flowers (fresh fig bouquets on the day I visited) and freckled with the ultimate epicurious decor, great food.

Ricotta Dumplings with mascarpone, lemon curd and cinnamon crumble for starters. This is not your every day breakfast menu rather it is a menu dominated by interesting combinations with an A+ for effort. Take a look at the Round Bird Can’t Fly menu for more information.

On the day I visited I ordered the Brioche French Toast with macerated berries and chai ice-cream. French toast makes me all nostalgic and this berry drenched brioche version has done nothing to mitigate my sentimentality.

IMG_7614

Round Bird Can't Fly brunch

There was also a lovely Kids Menu, which always makes me happy. The lovely toasted ham, cheese & tomato sandwich was happily devoured by my little man.

Coffee was hot, strong and delicious and served in Le Creuset.

Round Bird Can't Fly

The menu changes regularly and is  full of tempting options. The service was prompt and the cafe has a happy buzz to it.

A visit to  Round Bird Can’t Fly is a perfect way to start your day.

If you are looking for some other great ideas of places to visit in the Yarra Valley then look no further.

Yarra Valley Regional Food Group Farmers Market

This is part two of my visit to the Yarra Valley as a guest of the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group. It involves Shannon Bennet in a red helicopter, life-changing wine, expansive vistas and doughnuts.

I love visiting gorgeous farmers markets in and around Melbourne. I recently posted a list of my favourite markets in my local area. Now I have a new one to add. The original Granddaddy of all markets (and still as fresh as ever) the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group Farmers Market.

IMG_4561

Held in the grounds of beautiful Yering Station, and partially housed in a large barn to make it all-weather friendly, this market has a great selection of local products and produce. It is also extremely picturesque and you will love wandering around the property and just taking in those gorgeous views. Continue reading

I recently visited as a guest of the Yarra Valley Food Group.

One, Four: Life

__One + Four = Life

Hello and welcome. Thanks for visiting.

Here we are at week two of the One + Four = Life series. You can find week one, here.

I have had a tres busy, busy week, with birthday parties and sunshine and late nights and a little sadness. All of these good things have reminded me of loved ones who are no longer with here to share it all.

Here are my “one, four: life” photos.

sister

I moved house just over two and a half years ago. Oddly, I still don’t always feel at home here.

Home is where the heart is for sure, but also, where is home? I have moved around a bit and it is hard to know.

But, one of the ace thing about where I am living now is that I get to see a lot more of my sisters. The kids get to play with their cousins. I get to hang out with my nieces and nephews.

I have got sisters.  Five of them! Greedy, I know. But I really love having them in my life.

IMG_9491

This weekend I visited one of my all time favourite diners Innocent Bystander in Healesville, Victoria. Then we tootled off to the Healesville Sanctuary for a picnic in the sun. We ate cheese and bread and Portuguese tarts and we watched platypus swim. It was lovely.

Maybe the ultimate, Melbourne, Spring day trip….

I’ll have to think on that one. Have you got any other nominations?

FullSizeRenderLucky I am food blogger because I seriously had to concentrate to not have all of my images about food. This one is a special Fathers Day dessert I made and coincidentally it represents my family. Grandpa pudding, Mum & Dad pudding and the three little puddings.

Bit silly yes?

Bet your wishing you could eat it though.

I got the recipe from the lovely Jess at Locavore Cooking Studios in the Yarra Valley. Layered trifle with Stroopwafels inside. That is caramel encased between waffle, to the uninitiated. You can buy the Stroofwafels from the stunning Yarra Valley Regional Food Group Farmers Market.  Third Sunday of the month and well worth a visit.

Oooo, I could add the Yarra Valley Farmers Market to the Healesville road trip to level up!  Sounding good.

FullSizeRender

My little man had his birthday this weekend. He turned “thour.” For some reason he has trouble pronouncing his “th” a lot of the time, but then it turns up in unexpected places all perfect and well-formed.

Excuse me while I cry from now until November.

The kids really grow up too fast don’t they? No seriously, I am not being glib. THEY GROW UP TOO FAST. Someone should look into that.

The lovely Carolyn at www.irisandedie.com assures me that she is still celebrating with her son at 19, so that made me feel a little better.

I am trying to enjoy the moments, as they happen. without squeezing too long or too tight.

There it is, thanks for listening.

I would love you to sign up to my blog if you are interested.

Or come visit me at Friend Face and let me know your ultimate Melbourne road trip. I am desperately trying to reach 200 likes, so if you read something you enjoy, please share it around.

Enjoy your week.

Spring is in! Yay!

Yarra Valley Gateway Estate

Last weekend I was lucky enough to be taken on a very special tour through the Yarra Valley, as the guest of the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group. We were in search of good food and wine, and we found it in abundance.

fresh yarra valley produce from Gateway Estate

Orson Koch from  Yarra Valley Transfers was our chauffeur for the day. Charming and knowledgeable, he was able to fill in the landscape with tall tales, local gossip and foodie tips. He could also drive, which was very handy because we had a lot to cover.

The Yarra Valley sits in the undulating, vineyard-laced hills outside of the World’s Most liveable city, Melbourne. An easy 45 minute drive to the North East from the City, and one definitely worth taking.

Where the roads widen out and the horizon stands tall and green and proud, nestled there amongst the hills,  you will find the Yarra Valley.

I visit the Yarra Vally regularly for;

  • Wine, wineries, wandering.
  • U-pick cherries. Every November and December, without fail. Unique varietals, local, family-run farms. Amazing, intricate flavours.
  • Plump, juicy strawberries and blueberries that taste just like the ones that Grandma used to serve.

Well now I have a few more reasons to visit this beautiful part of Victoria.

First stop of the day was Gateway Estate.

Gateway Estate Yarra Valley

Run by Brett and his lovely wife Karen, Gateway Estate is a farm, cafe and local produce shop. This is a local business which Brett runs in conjunction with his brother. His Father also lives on the 110 acre property.

Brett and Karen from Yarra Valley Gateway Estate

I have driven past this roadside stall many times without stopping. I won’t be making that mistake again. This is a great place to pick up local produce and supplies including beef, pasta, tea, jams, pickles, spices, fruit and veg.

Shop

You can visit their on site greenhouse for a small amount of u-pick strawberries all year around. You can also purchase frozen, local berries which are often hard to come by at this time of year.

Gateway Estate started out as a wholesale market with a thriving business growing and selling Capsicum. A roadside stall was eventually added to sell their tomato crop and the business has evolved naturally from there. A lot of other local producers also now sell through the shop.

shop

It now exists as one of the best displays of Yarra Valley produce in the one spot.

and more. Visit their website for more information.

On the day I visited these gorgeous Cara Cara oranges were on display. With a very brief growing season they are only available for a short time. They were rich orangey red in colour and sweetly piquant in taste.

Yarra Valley Cara Cara Oranges

Brett was kind enough to take us for a tour of his growing sheds, the true heart of his business. We saw rows upon rows of strawberry plants in the u-pick strawberry growing room.

Gateway Estate strawberries

From there our tour we moved to the herb room. These basil plants look like little obedient herby soldiers, yes? Ready to obey your every cooking request.

Gateway Estate basil

Gateway Estate also produce a massive capsicum crop.

Yarra Valley Gateway Estate also has a cafe onsite and we were treated to a delicious egg and bacon roll and a cup of Yarra Valley Tea Co tea.

Gateway Estate Cafe Yarra Valley

Visit for a toasted egg, cheese and bacon roll using local ingredients. $9.50

Chunky Beef pie $5.95 , a sausage roll, or a lovely selection of filled donuts $3-$3.50.  Visit the Yarra Valley Gateway Estate Facebook page for more information.

All up we had a wonderful morning in a lovely venue.  This really is great, local, lovingly produced Australian produce at its best. How could you possibly say no to that?

Friday Phone in| Fun Things I’d love to do in Berwick & beyond. The Friday Phone in

So we have manned the phones, checked the town noticeboard and scanned the Parish Newsletter. The votes are in for our Friday Favourites and top tips for the weekend.

1. Bastille Day

Tuesday 14th July is Bastille Day. You can celebrate in style right here in Melbourne.

  • Big Spoon Little Spoon, in Warragul is putting on a 6 course degustation dinner for $60. Includes a glass of French Champagne on arrival. Here for details.
  • La Baguette Cafe in Berwick are celebrating again this year. Good food, live music, bubbles and fun. Last year I bought a delicious Croquembouche and the atmosphere was sparkly! Here for bookings.
  • Alliance Francais de Melbourne are having an open day and family treasure hunt in St Kilda. Race against the clock and follow clues to win great prizes. C’est Amusant!
  • Cafe de Beaumarchais  High Tea. $50 pp. 1pm and 3pm.

2. Cameo Cinema in Belgrave seems like the perfect place to visit in this cold weather. You could visit on Tuesday for cheap tickets, or Saturday & Wednesday to see the classics. “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn,” as long as you do it in style at Cameo.

3. Belgrave Big Dreams Market is on tomorrow. Plus there is an African Dance Workshop being run near by. Great little market, click here for the review. Belgrave Big Dreams Market

4. Raynors Stone Fruit Orchard in Woori Yallock is dripping with fruit. Kiwi, lemon, guava, lime & tamarillo. They offer a u-pick option that seems to include a ride on the tractor! They also run fruit bottling workshops.

fruits-599478_1280

5. Evolve Fine Food Store. After my little post on 8 Family Friendly Cafes in Berwick and Beyond, I was enthusiastically told to add Evolve Fine Food Store to my list. Broadsheet has posted their review here. 64-68 Monbulk Rd, Belgrave. Lunch anyone?

6. This Friday 17th July @ 7.30pm I will be going to “Ten Poems Gently Fall” at Earthly Pleasures Cafe in Belgrave. I am very excited. Local performance poet Cameron Semmens is launching his latest book.  Musician Rod Gear  is launching a music album “As Gently Falls.” So many creative people in one place! Entry is free. Will I see you there?

7. Follow the Chocolate Road.

pfalstersteine-602421_1280

Berwick Gluten Free and Chocolates is a speciality chocolate shop. Stop in for a gift pack or take home goodie bag (not open on Sunday).  From there you ice-cream-702938_1280could follow the chocolate road to Chocolate Sensation in Belgrave, for a light lunch, or Gino’s ah’ cioccolato for some Churro’s.  Onward to Cafe de Beaumarchais in Sassafras for a sweet, oozy hot chocolate and maybe some cake. Hyped up on sugar and feeling adventurous? You could aim for the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery in Yarra Glen. The ultimate destination for Chocolate lovers. Otherwise wander up the road in Sassafras, stopping to toast a marshmallow, and then shop until you drop at The Olinda Sweet Company.

Buy me some pear drops, pretty please?

8. It really seems the  right time of year for some slow cooked recipes. What with all the tall tales about cold conditions.

9.  Weather such as this calls for a cosy cafe. I recently put out the plea for recommendations of cafes to visit that have an open fire. My street-ers obliged (you are always in the know) with this great list. Feel free to keep adding to it please!

What do you think? Do you know of any other great things to do in our area this week?

Have fun whatever it is you do.
