The Story So Far: Port Fairy

We drove into Port Fairy late on Thursday night, footloose and childfree and high on the buzz of the first warm day that we have experienced for a long time. The moon was hanging heavy in the sky making everything glow with warmth and expectation.2016-08-18 18.43.53

Thanks to Great Ocean Road Tourism I was in town to experience some of the culinary delights on offer in one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Victoria; Port Fairy.IMG_6599

Bordered on two sides by the sea and with a plethora of gorgeous bluestone buildings Port Fairy is a perfect spot for a weekend away. It also has a gorgeous river running through it, a selection of great eating houses  and a thriving arts scene.FullSizeRender

We checked into our apartment right in the centre of town and headed out to our first rendezvous, Coffin Sally’s pizza bar. Coffin Sally’s is set up in what was once the undertakers building and what a spectacular building it is. Pete was our host for the evening and is also the owner of this excellent pizza bar.IMG_6551 Roaring fire, amazing bluestone building and salty, delicious pizza made for an excellent first night.2016-08-18 20.17.00

2016-08-18 19.55.26The next day we visited Limestone Gallery for lunch in their newly opened cafe. Once we pulled ourselves away from the beautiful sculpture garden we were able to enjoy a reuben sandwich like no other.IMG_6618

Dinner that night was at the very impressive Fen Restaurant. We pulled on our best party frocks (Ok, that was just me) and headed out for dinner at this sleek restaurant beside the Stag Inn Hotel.

The highlights here were the Abalone with Shiitake Mushroom and a desert featuring native Australian ingredients that were out of this world. Chef Ryan has a focus on native and foraged ingredients and he combines them with thoughtful consideration. This was a very “Australian” dinner, in all the right ways.IMG_6617IMG_6611

Well today the sun is shining again (Yay!) and we still have a little sight-seeing to do fuelled by coffee and a great nights sleep. If only the wind and rain would leave us alone.

Not a bad way to spend the last weekend of my mid-thirties. **cough cough
