Shira Nui Glen Waverley
Shira Nui is one of Melbourne’s most reliably good Japanese restaurants. Located in a small restaurant sitting back off Springvale Rd in Glen Waverley, you could easily walk pass this little gem of a eating house without stopping in to dine. If you did walk past, you would be making a big mistake.
Shira Nui has been around since 2003 and Chef Hiro Ishikura has been in charge of the kitchen for the whole time. Nab a seat at the Omakase bar ($90 for 9 courses) to really experience the best of what Shira Nui has to offer. Omakase allows the Chef to chose all the dishes that you eat, and at Shira Nui you are also likely to receive instruction on how to make the best of the stunning Sushi and sashimi.
I recently attended with the little ones in tow so we dined off the A La Carte menu. We ordered the Gyoza $10 (image above) which was unrecognisable, but delicious.
The Age Dofu ($13) which is silken tofu, cut into cubes, dusted in starch and then deep fried until crisp and brown. The Crispy, silky texture combination, combined with the sweet/ salty sauce, creates a little magical mystery tour for your palate.
The Karaage Chicken $15.
The Japanese hot pot with udon $35.
Shira Nui is a great restaurant for authentic Japanese food. Customers travel from across Melbourne to snap up a seat at the bar and with good reason. The service is attentive and polite and the restaurant is calm, simple and to the point. If you are hoping to try this excellent Japanese food, be sure to book.
