We tried a new thing last night. Mexican food at Fonda in Hawthorn.
This is new gen Melbourne Mexican food. Which is kind of like the Taco Bill mexican food that we grew up with, but funkier, fresher and with a little more sophistication. It also looks different. You can tell a new gen Mexican restaurant by taking a scroll through their Instagram feed. Photos with lots of sauce and brownish looking rice equals old skool. New gen mexican will be colourful and fresh with lots of little tasty, morsels.
We made out way to Fonda in Hawthorn because there was a birthday to celebrate and Mexican was requested. It was worth the trip. The colourful, spacious restaurant was fun and fantastic and “go Hawks” signs were plastered over every street corner in Hawthorn. For some inexplicable reason mini man barracks for Hawthorn, and it was so cute hearing him cheer his way down the street.
At Fonda we ordered Tostados, Chicken Quesadilla (pictured), one each of the chicken, beef and pork tacos and some chips for out mini man. The meat was slow cooked and shredded and each dish was served with an accompaniment. Think guacamole, pickled carrot, salsa. Think zesty, fresh mini salads with pops of pomegranate. Umm, um.
Fonda has three Mexican Cantinas for you to chose from.
